Voynich

For a room containing a dead body, it's remarkably tidy, was Moreen's first impression on entering the scene. Aside from the small crowd of white-gloved technicians combing the small study, and the body of Joshua Huber lying face-down in the center of the floor, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. With a practiced eye, Moreen scanned the room.

This is creepy, but in a seriously good way.

I'm glad! I haven't really tried my hand at writing creepy things before, but I have had a lot of inspiration lately.

I don't know if I'll come back to this one and tell more of it at some point, so all I'll say for now is that there is a ritualistic purpose to the killing.

You should be writing original mystery fic. I sincerely hope that is what you are doing.

Thank you! This is honestly the first time I've tried writing in the mystery/crime genre, but perhaps it's something I should consider developing further.

Ooh, nice detail at the end! And the little obsessive pattern-focused moments along the way really substantiated it.

I couldn't entirely get past the spelling of Moreen's name, which annoyed me. It's funny how that's usually a parent's fault, and yet it makes it seem as if the owner of the name is the one who's incompetent at spelling.

I'd love to know what the creepy symbols were, and why the victim (and maybe the detective) seemed to see people who weren't there.

One thing seemed clear, though: if you stab yourself through the eye as suicide attempt, it would be nearly impossible for you to have time or the mental wherewithall to hide the weapon. So, she was right to persist in trying to crack the case. :)

I tried spelling it "Maureen" and it just didn't work for her, somehow.
The pattern-obsessed thing is partially personal experience. It annoys me to no end when there's a brick or a tile that's off-pattern. It's not quite OCD. I guess it's just a need for things to be proper and orderly.

Oh, off-pattern things annoy me too. There's a whole range of "compulsive" behavior that doesn't begin to touch OCD. You could eat off of my brother's garage floor, and he's just a little OCD. But not to a debilitating degree. Mine is more order-based, but still... a long way from being a real issue. :D

You kept me hooked the entire time. Loved this, and would love to see more of this character.
