For a room containing a dead body, it's remarkably tidy, was Moreen's first impression on entering the scene. Aside from the small crowd of white-gloved technicians combing the small study, and the body of Joshua Huber lying face-down in the center of the floor, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. With a practiced eye, Moreen scanned the room.

I couldn't entirely get past the spelling of Moreen's name, which annoyed me. It's funny how that's usually a parent's fault, and yet it makes it seem as if the owner of the name is the one who's incompetent at spelling.
I'd love to know what the creepy symbols were, and why the victim (and maybe the detective) seemed to see people who weren't there.
One thing seemed clear, though: if you stab yourself through the eye as suicide attempt, it would be nearly impossible for you to have time or the mental wherewithall to hide the weapon. So, she was right to persist in trying to crack the case. :)

The pattern-obsessed thing is partially personal experience. It annoys me to no end when there's a brick or a tile that's off-pattern. It's not quite OCD. I guess it's just a need for things to be proper and orderly.
