If it’s not love / Then it's the bomb / Then it's the bomb / That will bring us together

Had you told me ten years ago that someday my favorite t.v. shows would turn out to be Battlestar Galactica, Stargate and Dr. Who, I probably would have looked at you funny and said, "Dude? What are you even talking about?" Of course, back then I also told my brother that nothing on earth could ever persuade me to read Lord of the Rings. I just ( Read more... )

mmmm, smiths. :D

Agreed on the sci-fi renaissance. I've heard that elsewhere, too.

I heard that song on 94.7 today and it's been in my head ever since. :)

(I friended you for Percy Weasley, Rogue Demon Hunter, and have until now lurked. Please forgive my un-lurky-ness; I'll most likely fade back into silence after this comment. :D)

While I mostly agree on the sci-fi renaissance subject (if anything, it's been going on for a few years now--especially with Buffy/Angel/Firefly being the amazing jewels they are), I have to respectfully disagree with the implication that classic!Who isn't as good as new!Who. Granted, the TV movie (the Americanized eighth Doctor thing) is rather crap, but some of the old Who is just plain awesome--City of Death was even written by Douglas Adams. [/pimping]

And your ficlet makes me smile.

Oh, please don't fade back into silence! Stay and chat awhile. :)

So I have to admit, I'm operating with limited knowledge of Dr. Who, and basing my impression of the old show on 1) the conventional wisdom that it's kind of dorky and 2) my own sci-fi novice impression of the movie. I'm entirely open to the possibility that my big love for the new series could change my mind.

The big thing that I do think has changed with 'new' sci-fi television versus 'old' is the production values. It's a big barrier to entry for me when a show just overall doesn't look good, or when all the characters are running around in ridiculous jump suits. As the genre becomes more mainstream more money gets thrown at it, the prettier it looks, attracting more people like me, and the cycle continues. So everybody wins!

You have no idea what kind of can of worms you've just opened. :D

The thing about classic-Who is (in my mind) that you kind of have to just focus on the characters and giggle when you have to. Some of the episodes have barely any special effects (I'm thinking City of Death, one of the best episodes of Doctor Who ever), and some...well, they were very good for their time, and that's really all you can say.

It is absolutely dorky. It's dorkier than a very dorky thing--but that's part of its charm. It also has something for everyone, in the sense that there are seven different Doctors to choose from. (And there are fewer jumpsuits than you might imagine, but the Doctors themselves wear some fairly...interesting...outfits. Cricketing whites, pirate outfits, the infamous Sixth Doctor's coat known to make children's eyes bleed, etc.)

But there's no doubt that production-wise, the new series wins, hands-down. The BBC actually seems to have more than ten pounds per year to spend on the show now, which is always good. ;)

This I can totally understand. I thoroughly enjoy some unforgivably cheesy shows because they hit my dork buttons in just the right way. One Tree Hill, for one example. The Lone Gunmen (lord help me), for another. ;)

I fully admit that I have issues to work through about jumpsuits and unitards. (What is with all the brown polyester in sci-fi? Do people think it looks futuristic? Was there a sale? What?) I could totally be talked into tuning into something where the main character wore a pirate outfit, though. Was there context, or was it just purposefully random?

But there's no doubt that production-wise, the new series wins, hands-down.It's very slick. One of the big moments that sold me on the series was the ( ... )

I'm so pleased that you're liking the new Who - I'm head-over-heels in love with it, of course, so seeing it spread is great. I love the old stuff now too - I think you just sort of have to get it, eventually - but you can't go wrong with sticking with new canon at least. (Though Sci-Fi's apparently editing little bits out. Argh!) (Oh, and if the old thing you watched was Americanized, it might have been the TV movie...which was like crack and crap at the same time. The real old skool stuff is way better. I'm completely in love with the First and Second Doctors, but we're talking b&w and really wobbly sets, heh).

Well, now I'm rambling about Who, since the new season starts in nine days and I'm overexcited. I remembered though that I promised you recs - so, here's a few that don't spoil you past Aliens of London (which is I believe where you're at?)

Elsewhen: a very sweet and interestingly written and structured Nine/Rose piece, that's got a lot of gen in it ( ... )

You are totally my source for all things Dr. Who at this point. :) Thank you for the fic recs! And thank you for the Jabe fic. I thought she was a lovely character, and was sad to see that they weren't going to do more with her.

Though Sci-Fi's apparently editing little bits out.

So the TWOP recapper tells us. Woe! It looks like they're cutting out some of the interesting character moments, too.

It seems like they're cutting all the cute Nine/Rose bits, mainly - woe. Not that those are the point of the show, but they're so lovely and fun. :)

No problem on the recs, I keep forgetting about it - I don't think I have anything for where you are now, but after the next episode I think there were a few good ones to recommend. Am glad to be of service for your Whovian needs, hee hee.

I think the Nine/Rose UST is managing to get through anyway. :) One of my friends who I pestered into watching the show was like, "Is there supposed to a little something-something going on there? Because if there is a) that's hot and b) daddy issues!" Which I thought was hilarious and true.

Thank you for the ongoing recs. They are most appreciated. I keep trying to surf different communities for the show and running away with my hands over my eyes from the spoilers.

Doctor Who!!! Another new, completely head-over-heels fan here. :)

Here's another Jabe fic I really liked: To No Longer Be A Sapling, by amchau.

Ooo. Thank you. That's a lovely fic. :) I'm glad to see so many other people on my friends list like this show, too. Now I can stop bothering my family and friends to watch it so that I have people to discuss it with!
