There is something very perverse about those photos. The children look so used. I wonder what their stories are. Well meaning white people take them from their families? Or are they children of brothels? Who knows. They just look so sad.
This just brings home even more how I would have been sold off soon after my son was born, because he can totally pass - blonde hair and blue eyes. Amazing.
Poor kids. Now I'm wondering what happened with them when they grew up. And they are very mixed. (I remember reading Harriet Ann Jacobs' (a.k.a. Linda Brent) autobiography. She herself was very light-skinned, and it's often mentioned in the story that her children favored their Caucasian father
