1958. The Enchantress Series

In 1958, Life Magazine invited Marilyn Monroe and photographer Richard Avedon to recreate images of five celebrated actresses of different eras.  Entitled “Fabled Enchantresses,” the piece was part of the magazine’s December 22 “Christmas” issue and included an article by Marilyn’s playwright husband, Arthur Miller, entitled “My Wife, Marilyn.”

i was never a marilyn monroe fan. she's beautiful, but the pictures of her are all the same and so plastic. these have changed that.

I'm glad to read this comment.

There are so many "plastic" images out there of her, but if you spent a bit of time on Google doing an image search, or even went to maybe the massive photo archives at ThisIsMarilyn.com, I bet you'd see a whole new side of her emerge... There are some really heartbreaking, sad photos of her, as well as some innocent, playful, make-up free photos too.

I've always wondered this myself about the last photo! Having Sally Rand as a great-auntie, I like to think Marilyn was paying homage to my family member!!!
