It is very lovely and heartbreaking because some many times when we are children we are as attached, if not even more attached to our pets because pets are always there when most adults cannot be. The loss can be very devastating for a child.

Exactly.

I've seen old post-mortem photos before, but not any with animals before. These actually brought tears to my eyes.

I guess , no. I think the second & the third were taken in 1860's.

ah okay. just wondering because the dog looks so similar. guess it was a popular breed.
