I think it's aliens. Haha. Just kidding. I don't have any pictures, but I usually see some kind of a bun, too, at the back whenever I catch a glimpse. I can't help much more than that, though, sorry.

Seconded. Great movie!

As for the hair, either low, small buns (figure 8 ones, perhaps?) or pin curls for shorter is probably the way to go. No idea what's going on with Garbo's hair in this photo, it looks a little like a late 20's/early 30's adaption of some form of historical hair to me.

I had the same trouble- this is a photo of my first go with fingerwaves (you can see them better in the other photos next to this one, but this one shows the bun I did).

Another idea- I saw something like this in a movie (Henry and June maybe? I think it was about Anais Nin). The girl had wavy shoulder length hair with waves in the front, and the rest of her hair lay over her shoulders naturally. Then she just gathered it into a low ponytail, flipped the ends up (vertically against her head) and pinned with bobby pins. You might experiment with something like that.

Or you could do a narrow french twist. That would look nice. I always associate fingerwaves with a very clean look, so really anything that pulls the hair back severely.

Sometimes they're fingerwaves, sometimes curls, and sometimes it is straight in the back with a crown of curls in the back.

Watch a lot of films is my pointer.
