I agree....villa_sorelleJanuary 6 2011, 02:46:57 UTC
But I can only change my actions, not theirs. So there's not one thing I can do about that, other than go to all events that I can, (barring work of course.)
It's up to the THEM crowd to want to make a change. Whatever side THEM's on. :)

I agree with you.
But it's good that you said it out loud.
I honestly think that's the main issue, and I wish there was a way to resolve it.
There have been things that have happened that I would find hard to forgive, but I have realized you don't have to like people in order to be in the same room with them at an SXA event.

This.
I do not even have to like a person to write them in for well deserved awards...I have
but with courtesy & chiv our mission statements (for the lack of a better way to put it) why can't we all just be polite at events? I am far from perfect but I do make it my goal..bad behavior at events is off-bounds when it comes to personal grudges
3. This particular 'old guard' IS getting a bit tired. As of November this coming year I will have been in the SCA for 30 years. [1st. event was Nov. 1981 in Skraeling Althing (Ottawa).] Havong held an office for all but a few months since May 1982 - at several different levels - I think I've earned the right to sit back a bit! :) :) :)

yeah, its a problem, but with new people coming up, hopefully they will be able to start doing more. I think the Roman event was a great starter, and I do believe we have so new novice cooks coming up. More experience with those smaller events will lead to us not having to be the front runners anymore.
And year, I've been in since 93, so I consider myself one of those old guards. My first experience with the SCA was a demo by June and Roger at Wolfcon, and my first event was a camping event at the old foxworthy place. 17 years and counting!!
Edited - math in the morning prior to caffeine is a bad thing....
Yeah - keep that Roman guy and encourage him. :) The pics looked like the event was a lot of fun.
Food costs - I would suggest Curia put out/publish a notice saying they will not accept food budgets over $10 a person anymore (or whatever limit is mutually agreed upon). Sorry, but I am just seeing a few of folks claiming persecution if a bid is brought forward and is shot down based on high food cost. If it is out in a public forum before a bid decision is made then it shouldn't be seen as a personal attack.
Seagirt never has dayboard included as part of the event fee. Some events start at 1 to avoid it, others, esp. when larger, have a merchant provide food. So you _can_ get food at the event, but your choice if you buy or bring your own.
If events are happening more out of city, and bus routes, are carpools being arranged? Just thinking there are a few folks who may not have there own transport and maybe don't know/too shy to ask?
Re: Changes?villa_sorelleJanuary 10 2011, 14:28:23 UTC
Good idea on the food cost. I actually think a feast of 8 dollars is plenty. Some one told me a person can only eat 1-2 lbs of food at one time, so 8.00 is plenty, interspersed with the low cost vegetables, etc.
I really am veering away from the dayboard. Too many people treat it as an all you can eat buffet, and its not designed to be such. Especially when your budget is around 2 bucks a head.
We are seeing more events in truro because the halls are cheaper. we're going to start looking at sackville as well.

I have to agree that dayboards have gotten out of hand... I felt horribly spolied for being allowed $60 years ago for the region war camp and then come to find that costs are going far above that. I think the mentality kinda comes from the foods that are becoming more common to dayboards, no more finger foods and other small things to tide you over, now we see full meals that require people to bring along bowls and plates... it's become a full meal, cafeteria style!
With some events it is timing. Not everyone knows far enough ahead to reserve more than a few days in advance. And the reservation date and cancellation dates recently seem to be the same day and still a week or more prior to the event
( ... )
Like I said, the economy is in a down turn and I think it behooves us to try and get the most out of our events that we can, keep the cost down so everyone can attend, and start to change our attitude about how events are run - food wise and hall choice wise. Its great to have a big site with lots of class space, but if we're only getting 40-60 people, we need to scale down our grandiose ideas about what we need in a hall
