Autumn already

It's definitely autumn after a summer that never really happened, but I like autumn: nice settled weather and those European trees up the valley showing their glorious colours later in the season ( Read more... )

Pavlova is funny :D
I totally agree about politics and depressing news. I was quite into current affairs when I was young but now it just upsets me. Oh apart from true crime because I am a sucker for that

I really don't understand the appeal of true crime either. I've walked away from convos about that. I do read murder mysteries if they're not too gory, though I'm puzzled by the "cosy" definition - how can killing another person be regarded as cosy? One recent one was a strange mix of comedy, farce, and cold-blooded murder because of what someone's ancestor did. Instead of being black comedy (which I will read), the parts just didn't go well together. True crime: never, unless it's a heist. But then, I loathe horror.

It is a strange interest, I think I got it after my mother read a book on holiday called Murders of the Black Museum when I was about 12 and had run out of books to read. I continued to be interested in such things but I was surprised when I found out that many women are interested in true crime. I also agree that I find the cosy label weird. I mean I have read a few that involve baking and knitting which are definitely cosy but they are still quite full of murder.

I always laugh when they come up in my bookbub recs. I said to Greg that they're almost all about a woman involved in the food industry (baking, cafe, cupcakes, whatever) in a cute location, often in the UK written by an American with no idea, and there's always a lurve interest. Just nope. I'm only tempted if there's something unusual, like a librarian or artist doing the solving, or [gasp] a woman doing non-traditional things; there's got to be something to grab me.

I did enjoy the middle-aged married New Jersey Italian-American woman; she might have been traditional with her involvement in the church etc, but she was full of personality and sass - and definitely not unfeasibly slender and beautiful. [looks them up] The Lucille mysteries by Peg Cochran; here's one to give you an idea. Fun and light, and I can just hear that Joisey accent. Damn; read them all; there are only 5. I note though that Cochran also writes the "Gourmet De-Lite mystery series and the Cranberry Cove mystery series" which sound like they fit the usual cosy ( ... )

I prefer escapism too.
I'm not fond of "disaster porn" either I prefer my news factual rather dwelling on each gory moment.

People really seem to get some sort of strange pleasure out of it. I even had a stranger in a public loo try to start a conversation: "Ooooh, aren't the Australian bush fires terrible!" "Yes," I said, and walked out.

And on holiday once some people we'd just started talking to said, "Wasn't it horrible what that man did to that cat." "I DON'T WANT TO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT!" I shouted and fled. Sometimes I really don't like humans.
