and now, an internet meme

With the recent wank in the SPN fandom, wincon in particular is getting some very bad press when in reality it sounds as if it's a very nice, friendly convention. In light of this - and other recent convention wank - here's an internet meme.

THE CONVENTION LOVE MEME+talk about positive experiences you've had a convention - any convention. Anecdotes ( Read more... )

meme time!

Collectormania London 2009. Best weekend of my life. In which I made a new best friend, accidentally stalked Misha Collins and Jason Momoa, and fell even more in love with Rene Auberjonois than I already was. And got free all sorts of things. :D

I kept a written diary:

And a photo diary:

It was my first convention and the best thing ever.

This is a bit random, and not my best con experience, but it was so unusual that I've never forgotten it ( ... )

What a wonderful story! I think there's a lot to be said for cosplay in terms of what it can do for one's self-confidence. I'm so glad you were accepted in the spirit you intended and the experience was so fantastic. ♥

I've been to 30 or 40 cons over the years - most as an audience member, although I helped staff a couple, was on the concomm for a couple, and was a guest at a couple. I had a good time at almost all of them. Most were Creation, a few run by much smaller professional companies, and the rest were fan-run. They all have the usual set of problems: long lines, not enough time to get meals, that sort of thing. But I got to hang out with friends, meet some celebs, buy some goodies - all for the good.

My main convention is Anime Boston. I have been going since 2005, and joined the staff in 2009 as the new Publications Manager. I've always had a positive convention experience with them, so I was delighted to be able to work with them. My working for them started with a bang, as I was asked to completely rebrand the convention. The result of this can be found on my Flickr. It was an excellent project, and I'm still elated and dumbfounded that it got so much positive feedback and helped generate a lot of income for the convention through sales of cute Anime Boston merchandise.

As for good times when not working for conventions, the first time I met my good friend miss_arel face-to-face was at Anime Boston 2006. Since then I've have great luck meeting people I know and admire. In 2009, I met the ninjaconsultant anime podcast, who then in 2010 asked me to co-host a panel with them. In 2010, I met Clarissa from the Anime World Order podcast, and she is one of the people in the anime community I most respect ( ... )

I dunno, one of my high points at Katsucon 09 was getting mistaken for a street performer for trying to do the Hare Hare Yukai dance while dressed as England from Hetalia. That was pretty amazing. Also, all those times that person who was my America gagged everytime she had to take a bite of that awful, awful breakfast burger for photos. That was pretty awesome too.
