I.e the new series by Joss Whedon, starring Eliza Dushku. First episode looks pretty interesting, introducing characters and the setting, while jumping right into the action ( Read more... )

I watched parts of it with my brother; I was all ready to get into Dollhouse until I saw the gratuitous showing of skin on all the women, which was kinda ick to me. But anyway, my brother's verdict? "I can't tell if I love it or hate it." ;)

Yes, that was one of my main squicks as well. For example, in the party scene near the beginning, I kept looking at how extremely short Eliza's dress was, and fearing we'd get a panty shot any minute :P... (then again, that would be anime...)

Still, I'm willing to give it a few more episodes before I make my final verdict. The premise sounds interesting and they could do interesting stuff with it, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

The "too cool to wear a helmet on a motorcycle" moment had me cringing as well. The show seems interesting and it will take a few more episodes for me to decide whether it is a hit. As much as I love Eliza Dushku, I think it was a bit of a stretch to see her as a serious, take-charge negotiator. Somehow, that characterization just felt awkward.

IHowever, it was good to see a television show that had nothing to do with crime scene investigations, hospitals, reality TV or talent contests...

"too cool to wear a helmet": remember that character was programmed according to a young man's fantasy.

Also about the negotiator: that was not Echo, but an invented character (based on people whose age we don't know), so I'd say the awkwardness was pretty much the point -- the dolls can be anything, not just what the original person could be.

I'm just a bit sensitive about the helmet issue since I ride a motorcycle. I was just seeing it from a role model point of view. ;P

I don't think that's the only thing in the show not advisable from a role model point of view. :-)

I liked it, if not loved. But I didn't love Buffy based on the pilot either.

The premise is a decent one, and I look forward to seeing what Whedon can do with a seriously creepy series about slavery and exploitation. I expect a lot less light humor and witty dialogue than from his previous ones (except maybe during engagements where the character is supposed to be light and witty -- making coming back to "reality" even more harsh).

I hope the show will live past the first seven "pilot" episodes and not be cancelled by Fox before the "arc episodes" begin.

Yes, the uncomfortable feeling given by the Dollhouse and the dolls was probably intentional. Echo's blankness after a mindwipe was very creepy, and I already got a mad genius vibe from the tech guy. I'm also interested in Amy Acker's doctor and her scars.

From comments around my f-list, I understand the pilot episode got pretty good ratings, so I'm cautiously hopeful it won't be cancelled immediately. It depends on how well the subsequent episodes do, I guess.

I thought it was interesting and I'm looking forward to next episodes. Not making Eliza the hero coming in with the guns and saving the girl that way was a good solution ;)

Yes, that was a good decision. And I already want to know more about the other girl, the one who did come in with guns blazing :).
