LOL, these episodes always seem to be much funnier when you understand what Ken is going on about. He is so totally oblivious about what Rei is hinting at and always goes for the first, easiest answer before (maybe) finally figuring the real reason behind her actions.
Then again, I must say that not all the blame is centered on Ken, because Rei does tend to act in quite oblique ways to show her affection for him. I guess it's just to show how ambiguous her feelings towards him are.
Rei seems to be quite a romantic waiting for her knight in shining armor to arrive. Ken's fumbling attempts to get closer to her seem to go quite past her radar. She doesn't understand him and thinks him quite slow and isn't even that sure that she likes him.
All through this series it's quite clear that it's not only Ken who has to change (the past), but Rei also has to change and grow up quite a bit before they can be together. I'm still hoping for the happily-ever-after with Ken and Rei...
Even though the attraction between them was clear even in their high school days, neither of them really acted out on it. Then again, Ken was so extremely unlucky in everything he did. At least in the first two episodes it's clear to see that he's always running (literally) to catch up on things. And Yamapi has also noted in his j-web entries that he is always running while filming this drama :).
I found it extremely cute how his friends got him away from the classroom for throwing the paper planes in order to write their birthday wishes to him on the blackboard! Awww!
Rei thinks he's quite slow to catch up on her hints, but you have to remember that he is supposed to be a very young guy. They really aren't the most observative creatures, now are they :). It's no surprise the young Ken didn't catch up on Rei very oblique hints - it's only the older Ken who is frantically looking for a reason why she was so unhappy with him that can find out the real reason for the unhappiness she showed in the beginning picture for this episode.
Listening to the song Ken is FINALLY thinking, and remembering that she was quite frantic that he NOT lend out the CD to Tsuru, so there must be something important about it. The lyrics of the Mongol 800 song fit so well to the scene ("Chiisana Koi No Uta"
MU,
Mediafire).
The lyrics of the song give an indication to the words that the spoilers said that he wrote on the blackboard her to see: "Look, the person who is important to you is right beside you." His actual message says: "An important person is sitting right beside me." Which was so cute!
But Ken really is the unluckiest of guys! No wonder he needs the help of a fairy godfather! A new teacher, who everybody can see is the present-day Rei's fiancé erases Ken's message to her from the blackboard :(. Oh no!
I wonder what will happen in episode three now that the teacher is in the picture...
Edit for typos & clarity.
