I've been on Facebook and twitter about this but thought I'd also put here in my journal.

The Sunday Times ran a front page story yesterday about equalising marriage and civil partnership under the state. It was also on the BBC news but the Sunday Times story was more detailed.

Hear, hear!

Yes, it should be possible for ANY couple to have a secular ceremony that gives them a full marriage that is good for any social and legal purpose. Let it be, and quickly. It's a scandal that you have to divorce to get a GRC.

I don't know what to say about ceremonies with some religious content. Those who are obedient to the rules of their faith may continue to insist on partners remaining subject to strict prohibitions, even if they are in fact the very couple who wish to marry, though perhaps you'd wobble if imposing an agonising and self-imposed ban. Equally I imagine that you can take your faith very seriously, and yet feel able or even compelled to dispute what is allowed. But I'm not religious, not any denomination or faith, indeed not bound by any dogma or philosophy whatever, and it's not my fight.
