Hollywood hates movies because that's what they make their living from, and they can never escape it. They just want the money to appear and see their project go away. So anytime something outside the direct sphere of moneymaking comes into play (authors, silly things like copywrights) they throw more money at making them go away.

Just my theory. and i'm buying a a copy.

I think you've summed it up nicely. Instead of just being a printing press for money, filmmakers want to make movies. Still, I'm amazed by the collective capacity of film execs to kill their golden geese.
