((Yeah, people suck sometimes. You know what's REALLY creepy? In the town where I grew up, in Nortern Connecticut, there's a farm that makes maple syrup. They tap trees in all the public spaces in town. Including the cemetaries. EEWWW!))
She shakes her head a little. "They're cut way down to the ground and there's not usually enough left to grow back. Maybe I should bring them some food...what kind would you suggest?"
He thinks for a moment. "Whenever there was a celebration we would save some of the food and and ale or mead and bring it to the family graves. So I would suggest things that you would eat on special occasions.
We would also leave sacrifices, but that seems to have fallen out of favor with humans."

((From an OOC standpoint, the bigger problem for my family leaving stuff on graves was it always getting stolen. >.> ))

Maybe you could put the plant in a clay pot? That way it'd mess up the grass clipping machine thingy if it tried to go over it.
