Double Birthday All Across the Day

Birthdays for twins were more than twice as hard. Three times, at least, Ali thought; four when they're as different as her two. And she wouldn't have it any other way. Having twice as many presents was easy. A double theme was a little harder, but birds and bees work well enough. There were two colors predominant in the decorations, a cheery

Sasha was more than pleased to lend a hand anywhere she could--and with two excited children, there was every chance they'd need at least two watchful mothers.

Her gift for the little pair was one meant for sharing, but in enough individual parts that neither would feel cheated: a fresh library of age-appropriate books to replace all those already gummed into submission.

A second mother is always a blessing, and especially today. Neither of the twins is content to wait their turn, even when turns alternate. They both want to be first all the time! It's their special day, doesn't everyone know the birthday baby is supposed to be most important and get everything all the time?

As for this whole "sharing" concept, any initial doubts are reconciled by the sheer number of books. There will be much nomming. So much nomming! (They have a very high fiber diet.)

The Prince of Stories puts in an appearance (as Ali must have expected, or even invited), bringing with him a gift for each twin. Cateline receives a blanket of serene comfort, woven of threads plucked only from the very sweetest of dreams, while Donovan receives a daring rattle, which is made to sound every time he is about to do something that will have serious repercussions he might prefer to avoid.

Morpheus was invited, with his expected arrival carefully timed to fall some time after the messy eating of things but before cake: in short, just in time for the presents. After all, Ali's going to need a little time to get the mashed potatoes out of her hair.

The gifts are very well appreciated, although the seemingly random rattling does draw the curiosity of certain feline family members. While Donovan contemplates how best to use his handful of cake, Cateline's much more decisive (and less destructive) in feeding it to Morpheus.

Dream accepts Cateline's offer of hospitality with good grace, thanking her politely for the offer. To Donovan, he notes in a quiet aside that such confections are usually best when eaten.

Donovan will eat his cake--but only after he's mashed both kinds together, and made quite a mess of himself in the process. It's almost like he doesn't know that food is not fashion.
