Double Birthday All Across the Day

Birthdays for twins were more than twice as hard. Three times, at least, Ali thought; four when they're as different as her two. And she wouldn't have it any other way. Having twice as many presents was easy. A double theme was a little harder, but birds and bees work well enough. There were two colors predominant in the decorations, a cheery turquoise for Donovan and a pretty purple for Cateline. Two towers of presents, with two sets of wrapping papers and two kinds of ribbon, awaited demolishing by eager young hands. There were two options for each course in the mix-and-match menu--and everything was finger food, so it was safe to have two servings. And of course, there would be two cakes (one chocolate, and one appropriately beehive-shaped honey).

Ali had tried to include the twins in the planning as much as she could. They couldn't really talk yet, although they were certainly trying, but they had their ways of making themselves known. Food preferences were easy to figure out, and special birthday outfits were picked out by a process of elimination. She left arranging to music to Sel, trusting there'd be plenty of child-appropriate songs for the sort of bopping around the twins call dancing. Ali even let other people do most of the cooking, because getting two excited babies ready for a party was as much as her two hands could manage.

And it was only the first of, she hoped, many to come.
