Archive Kyuhyun looked around the room and wondered exactly what he had done to be here. It was supposed to be a practice session for the competition - at least which was according to Donghae who trapped him outside his classroom just five minutes ago. The enthusiastic older boy had not allowed Kyuhyun to protest the slightest bit, just proceeded to drag Kyuhyun to the room once he found out that the younger boy had nothing more for the rest of the day. Maybe I should have said that I had something on when he asked me.
Kyuhyun froze at the doorway when Donghae opened the door to the room and bounced away; leaving Kyuhyun alone, for the scene in front of him was not what he associated when he was told that it was a practice session. Sure there were people dancing at one end, and there was the other group near the piano, seemingly singing, although Kyuhyun could not hear them over the chaos. Chaos - that was what the scene said to Kyuhyun. Maybe it’s just organised mess?
Kyuhyun was sorely tempted to step back out the door - It’s just one step Kyuhyun. No one has noticed you yet. - when he was spotted by Changmin.
“Kyuhyun! What are you doing standing there?”
Changmin walked over to Kyuhyun, pulling him by the arm.
“You’re not escaping from this. If I have to be here, I’m not doing this alone.”
Changmin whispered into Kyuhyun’s ear, while still maintaining his smile to everyone else.
Kyuhyun could only watch helplessly at the door that was becoming further and further away from him as he was pulled towards the group. Donghae, as if he had just remembered that he brought Kyuhyun there, looked at Kyuhyun, waving as the other boy was dragged rather unwillingly to the group.
Kyuhyun was welcomed quite enthusiastically by Leeteuk and Jaejoong. He strongly believed that he had imagined two voices exclaiming to each other that “our baby has arrived!” Ryeowook was sitting by the piano - he had been playing on it before Kyuhyun and Changmin arrived - and he smiled at the two newcomers before Yesung caught his attention again. His other roommate Henry drifted towards them as they neared. Kyuhyun glanced vaguely at the other tall guy - was it Zhou Mi? - who looked the slight bit nervous about being there. There was another guy by the piano, though Kyuhyun did not know his name. Before he could ponder on that further, Jaejoong spoke.
“So Kyuhyun, Changmin, Zhou Mi, how are your singing skills? We need to decide whether you three should focus on the vocals or the dance, though we’ll all be doing both in the end.”
Jaejoong looked at the three, his eyes lingering on Kyuhyun that slight bit longer. He had not forgotten their previous encounter at the café. The name still lingered on his lips, and he had to catch himself when he spoke to Kyuhyun. Hyunnie…
All three of them shrugged at the question. Jaejoong, upon seeing that none of them was going to add on to their shrugs, proposed that they sang a short verse of a song so that they would be able to fit the voices into their composition. He had already heard Henry’s voice and seen Henry’s violin skills - though the younger boy did blush like a red tomato when he realised that he was going to perform to Jaejoong - as Henry had arrived earlier with Ryeowook who could not stop praising Henry’s violin skills to Jaejoong.
Zhou Mi used to sing. It became his only source of comfort when he was in China and had no way of communicating with Sungmin and Shindong. But he sang only for himself and when he was alone - not counting his two good friends and family. He looked at the other two, and decided by default of being the oldest that he was to go first. Clearing his throat, Zhou Mi nodded to Ryeowook who began playing the song. He was distinctly aware of the people staring at him and that made him stumble over the first few notes. He mentally winced at the sound of his voice echoing to him. But as the song went on, he managed to ignore the stares - or the thought that he was performing in front of people - and hit the notes perfectly for the rest of the verse. Zhou Mi blushed a little when he ended the verse at the nods he was receiving from the rest around the table. He heard a chuckle which he could recognise no matter how long they had not seen each other and peeked from the side of his eyes at Sungmin who looked expectantly at him. He allowed the small smile to show on his face as he caught the intent behind Sungmin’s look. Yes, put me in front of the head of a gang and I won’t even shake in fear. But put me in front of school kids to sing, I tremble and blush.
Kyuhyun had shrugged for he truly had no idea about his singing skills. He had not sung in front of people - he did not sing often alone - ever since they were separated. Singing had only served to remind him of his brother, someone he was always trying to forget in order to carry on with his life. But, sometimes it seemed to Kyuhyun that the more he tried to forget, the more he was reminded of his brother. He was not quite sure why he was even here in the first place. Kyuhyun steadily ignored the voice in his head that whispered, “Because you don’t want to forget him.”
Kyuhyun was looked at expectantly after Zhou Mi. It took the younger boy a while to work out why they were all staring at him. Oh, they’re going by age. Kyuhyun searched his mind for a song to sing, only realising then that most of the songs he knew were songs he used to sing with his hyungs. He had no intention of singing those now. Those belonged in his memories. Finally he found a song which he had just heard on the radio the other day. It would have been less trouble to just sing the song Zhou Mi had sung - the only problem was that Kyuhyun had never heard the song Zhou Mi was singing before. Closing his eyes, Kyuhyun sang, with no idea what he sounded like.
Yoochun found that he was staring at the new tall boy - although technically all three that were going to sing were tall. The first one had a somewhat deep voice, and though he started out a little rough, Zhou Mi managed to pull through in the end. He admitted that the tall boy had a stunning voice, but that was not what his mind was concerned with at the moment. There was something familiar about the boy in front of him. He was sure that he had seen him before and that their first meeting was not at the café. Well, you could have just met him along the corridors. The maths classrooms are just round the corner from law. Yoochun tried to reason, but he could not shake off the feeling that there was more to that. It was just escaping his memory at the moment. Then it clicked.
“It’s him!”
Everyone around the piano jumped at the exclamation. Even those at the other side of the room turned their heads curiously towards Yoochun.
“What? Chunnie, what are you talking about?” Jaejoong was the first to recover his wits.
Yoochun looked around, turning red at the sight of everyone staring at him. He had not meant to exclaim out his discovery. Ducking his head slightly, Yoochun answered Jaejoong.
“Nothing, Umma, I just remembered something.”
Before Jaejoong could question more, someone entered the room.
“Hi, I’m sorry I’m late!”
Junsu dashed into the room, with his books clenched to his side. Yoochun heaved a sigh of relief quietly, glad that Junsu had distracted everyone from him. Junsu bounded up to them.
“So, what have I missed?”
Jaejoong looked at Yoochun, as if gauging whether to continue to pursue the matter, when Leeteuk answered Junsu.
“We’re just listening to their voices. Changmin ah, why not you go next?”
Kyuhyun cast a questioning look at Yoochun - That’s his name - before turning his attention to his roommate. He wondered what that was all about. Seeing that he was most likely not going to get an answer, Kyuhyun shrugged, putting the incident on the list of weird things he associated with this group of people. As he focused on Changmin, he did not notice the lingering stares on him.
Putting the chaotic ending to Kyuhyun’s song behind him, Changmin sang. Changmin loved to sing. His father never quite approved of his passion for singing, but allowed it because his mother had pleaded for him. But it was only within the confines of his home. He was not allowed to do things related to music outside of the house. Medicine was a course his father chose for him, wanting his son to follow his footsteps. Changmin could not deny that he did like medicine. He just did not know whether he wanted to be a specialist doctor like his father. Living in the dormitory, though he did not want to leave his mother, allowed Changmin the freedom to pursue things he was never able to do. Taking up music was one of the choices his father did not know about. He just did not quite expect to be pulled into joining a music competition almost the minute he entered university, though he had to admit that he was quite happy about it.
Yoochun stared at Kyuhyun, his mind now filled with more questions about the boy in front of him. Casting a sideways glance at Ryeowook, he wondered what exactly the smaller boy had triggered in Kyuhyun to cause such a reaction. So focused on his thoughts, Yoochun did not notice the looks given to him.
Jaejoong looked at Kyuhyun, then back to Yoochun, wondering what the connection between the two was. His mind had only been wrapped round the conversation he had with Kyuhyun at the café, but he could not remember clearly in his memories about the little boy. They were fuzzy and all he remembered clearly was the name “Hyunnie”. There are loads of people in the world with ‘Hyun’ in their names. What Jaejoong could not shake off was the feeling that the name belonged to his new charge.
Jaejoong turned slightly, feeling someone’s eyes on him. A smile entered his face as his eyes met Yunho’s. He caught a fleeting anger from his lover’s eyes, but thought that he had imagined it for Yunho never got angry. Breaking off the stare, Jaejoong turned back to the group just as Changmin ended his song.
What Jaejoong did not notice was that Yunho had seen him staring at Kyuhyun.
However, Yunho was not the only person who had been staring at the other group.
“Kibummie, are you even listening to your hyung?”
He turned back to his hyung, turning his attention away from the other group, nodding along to the things Donghae was saying.
