This was definitely a case of, "what was in my head already just happened to line up" more than anything! :)

Love it. I hope they make it despite their naïveté. Oh to be young again and think everything is possible.

I know - writing this, part of me is like, "Man, teens sure think they have it all figured out," but then also... I want them to make it, too! Maybe they're just idealistic kids that don't know any better, but I'm still rooting for them. :) Thank you for your kind words.

You really capture teens well. And this sounds like sci fi in some senses, but it rings so true. My kids are 20, 18, and 15 and yeah, they just want to fly and grab their future. My son is more Shubert and my oldest daughter more like Carol but both of them want a future they can't see or grasp yet. Son wants to chuck it all, ride the wind and find freedom. My older daughter works hard, determined that if she follows the rules, she will get the great future she deserves.

Your bit about seeing lips makes me think of our life of masks right now.

This has all the marks of a really spectacular YA book. Write it!

Thank you - yeah, my idea for my stories is to try and fall firmly into "very mild sci-fi." I want to tell stories that are maybe not entirely as bleak as the world they take place in. :)

I haven't really planned on going back to any characters in the contest (although that might change if I get far enough that I run out of ideas) but I do like these two so I might just re-visit them!
