The first large purchases for the trip hav been made. My new MacBook Pro (15" - I was gonna go for the 17 - but, hey - less to carry is less to carry. Plus they didn't have the case in orange. I'm shallow like that.)

You asked: maybe someone else will have better ideas about how to safely store that data in duplicate so I have backups.

Is there a way to upload your interviews to a protected podcast that only you can access?

I was thinking along similar lines- I don't know anything about podcasting, but any audio file that could be burned to CD could be uploaded to a server and stored there. I do that with files when my computer gets too stuffed.

y'know - I don't know about podcasting, but I do happen to work for a webhosting company, and thus have pretty unlimited server space. I'm really not sure why I didn't think of that myself. Ugh. So yeah, I can just upload the audio files to my server. I won't *always* have internet access wherever I am, but it won't be too far off. :) thanks!

that's awesome that you're about ready to go. i think the above suggestion is really good ... maybe since you have a mac now you can investigate getting a .Mac account which would allow you to upload and backup data from your macbook to their virtual server on a regularly scheduled basis. only you can access those backup files.

(heard all about it on my last visit to the apple store!!)

Ooohhh!!! Nice new pretty toys!!!! Is is weird that electronics turn me on just a little bit? o.0

And it is hotter than Calcutta during a heatwave over here on the East Coast in September. Shit, we've been going through a decent heatwave now. The humidity is killer. Sometimes so thick you could cut through it with a knife, so prepare to sweat. Air Conditioning is our friend.

Good Luck! :)

Is it better in mid-october/November?

Yes, the air gets a bit crisp, and there is still some humidity but it is not nearly as bad as July or August. If you came out here about mid-September, you would be fine. So where on the east coast are you headed?

I'd even say that is starts to get better in early October. Sometimes even late September. I seem to recall it being cooler by my birthday which is the 23rd of September-I'm not a native, but I seem to remember being able to wear long sleeves by my birthday the last time I was here in September. I'm not a big fan of oppressive heat, so I tend to look forward to the cool off. Don't come too late in the year though, unless you want to deal with snow. It has been known to snow very early over on this side of the country, and the further north you go, the more likely that becomes. And I've heard about how you Portlanders love to deal with snow. ;)
