[ dawn had forgotten how boring being her used to be. all polite and sweet and utterly, sickening good. little dawnie never felt frustrated restlessness like this, the anger and itch in her teeth begging her to do something. bite someone. feed and glut herself on human blood. it's been over a week of pretending to be just the same, and it's wearing. pretending to be safe to get a meal is one thing; pretending the same for a long period is annoying.
so she's out, wandering. the extras aren't worth murdering to take the edge off; she tried but they taste like sawdust and cardboard, and they don't even scream. it's pointless, and she can't even get a meal out of it. no, she needs something human. maybe it's time to play it a little less safe and find a warm body.
spotting movement out of the corner of her eye, dawn smiles widely and then pastes on a sweet expression. the girl who called her a hooker will do just fine. ]
Mattie! It is Mattie, right? [ she stands, abandoning her cup of coffee to cross the sidewalk; not too close yet,

[Mattie recognizes the woman immediately, and nods with a very slight hesitation. They are not on the best of terms, no one's fault but her own for being impulsive and too quick to judge, but last they spoke it was at least cordially.]
Yes, it is. I have put in a few thing but I had thought it would be nice to have something decorative as well. Camomile or verbena. They would be very useful.
[This is important, lest anyone think Mattie might be a frivolous girl.]

Nothing just pretty, too? I don't think there's a rule that says you can't mix useful with fun.
[ like making a meal of the snippy little girl who implied you turn tricks and dress skanky. dawn smiles, wide and friendly. she's hungry and mattie should have watched her mouth: useful and fun. ]

There is also no rule that says useful things cannot be pretty.
[Wasting time on decorative things would feel like she's accepted her fate, and Mattie isn't ready to give up on the idea that she'll be going home soon.
The olive branch is a magnanimous gesture, one Mattie wouldn't feel right refusing.]

[For all that she treats people with suspicion, Mattie has a very black and white view of the world. Dawn is being nice to her, therefore she is nice. Otherwise why would she bother? It's not as though Mattie has anything she could possibly want, right?]
I know of a place that will not be very far to go. We can walk there.
[hesitation - Mattie really is trying to be considerate.] Unless you have a preference for a particular supplier.

[ normally, mattie would be right. unglitched, dawn is one of the safest people in taxon for her to be around. glitched is another story, and dawn scans the streets around them for anyone else with a telltale silver band. witnesses are generally a bad idea when you're trying to keep your profile low. ]
Actually, there's a great one just over that way. [ dawn gestures vaguely in a direction that most likely has never seen a plant shop. ] Here, I'll show you.

[Mattie accepts Dawn's authority on the matter -- she has been in town for much longer, after all -- and allows herself to be led in that direction. There are no monsters beyond men like Tom Chaney in her world, so she can't imagine a reason to feel suspicious or concerned for her safety, even when walking into an unknown area of the city with a stranger.]

[ it only takes a little maneuvering to get mattie slightly ahead; not far enough she'll notice she's being led, but definitely enough dawn can look around them one last time before letting her face shift and then grab mattie by the shoulders, tugging her back with a grip that's inescapable.
from there it only takes a moment to tug mattie's head to the side and sink fangs in, ignoring the attempts at a struggle she makes. ]

[Mattie screams, of course, and struggles as fiercely as she can. It's an awkward position to fight from, though -- hard to get any kind of purchase on her attacker and impossible to escape her grip. And her neck hurts, there are teeth and she can't even imagine what that means.]

[Dan has slowly been navigating through more and more of Taxon on his own. His goal is to know the entire city by walking on foot should he ever be in a situation without his tablet. For as reclusive as Dan can tend to be, he views it as a large step in the right direction.
He is doing his routine mapping of the land when he hears the scream and old instincts kick in like they had never left. He takes off in a sprint towards Dawn, ready to pry her off Mattie with force if need be.]

[ it's hard to look peeved with blood smeared over your mouth, while holding the source of that blood to keep her from wiggling, but dawn manages it. then with a disgusted sigh she stops drinking and looks up, letting her face go back to normal. ] Seriously, you couldn't have waited five more minutes?
[ after a split second, she shoves mattie at dan, trusting her wooziness and dan's heroic impulses to make sure he catches her instead of jumping at dawn. ] Hate to dine and dash but three's a crowd, blah blah other clichés.
[ and now for the running. peace out, mattie. thanks for lunch! ]

[Mattie's immediate instinct is to struggle against this new pair of hands as well, although dizziness and disorientation are setting in and hampering her attempts. She has at least enough sense left to press her hand to her neck and try kicking at Dan's shins.]

[After getting in a solid kick that Dan is sure will leave a bruise later, he holds Mattie out at arm's length, giving her a bit of a nudge away from him every time another kick comes close.]

I would feel better if you let me look out for you for a while. I've got some bandages at home and a hot meal.
