[Sent at least a half hour after Mattie's arrival at the party.]

You okay?

[It takes a while for her to reply, typing doesn't come naturally, but she's been practicing.]

Of course I am. Why would you think I would not be?

Have you forgotten where we are?

I have not. We are in a city called Taxon, and I am perfectly capable of taking a walk by myself, Mr. Draper.

[ dawn had forgotten how boring being her used to be. all polite and sweet and utterly, sickening good. little dawnie never felt frustrated restlessness like this, the anger and itch in her teeth begging her to do something. bite someone. feed and glut herself on human blood. it's been over a week of pretending to be just the same, and it's wearing. pretending to be safe to get a meal is one thing; pretending the same for a long period is annoying.

so she's out, wandering. the extras aren't worth murdering to take the edge off; she tried but they taste like sawdust and cardboard, and they don't even scream. it's pointless, and she can't even get a meal out of it. no, she needs something human. maybe it's time to play it a little less safe and find a warm body.

spotting movement out of the corner of her eye, dawn smiles widely and then pastes on a sweet expression. the girl who called her a hooker will do just fine. ]

Mattie! It is Mattie, right? [ she stands, abandoning her cup of coffee to cross the sidewalk; not too close yet, ( ... )

[Mattie recognizes the woman immediately, and nods with a very slight hesitation. They are not on the best of terms, no one's fault but her own for being impulsive and too quick to judge, but last they spoke it was at least cordially.]

Yes, it is. I have put in a few thing but I had thought it would be nice to have something decorative as well. Camomile or verbena. They would be very useful.

[This is important, lest anyone think Mattie might be a frivolous girl.]

Nothing just pretty, too? I don't think there's a rule that says you can't mix useful with fun.

[ like making a meal of the snippy little girl who implied you turn tricks and dress skanky. dawn smiles, wide and friendly. she's hungry and mattie should have watched her mouth: useful and fun. ]

I could help you pick them out.

There is also no rule that says useful things cannot be pretty.

[Wasting time on decorative things would feel like she's accepted her fate, and Mattie isn't ready to give up on the idea that she'll be going home soon.

The olive branch is a magnanimous gesture, one Mattie wouldn't feel right refusing.]

That is very kind of you, thank you.

[ while damon may be unaware that mattie's been attacked, he is able to read a dot on the map. when hers doesn't move for a few hours, he figures it's a good enough time to drop something off. he's going to drop boxes on the doorstep and bail, after indulging in a little ding-dong ditch just because he can.

the mountain of packages is full of clothes; dresses-- most of them more conservative than he would pick if he was dressing anyone else, but part of the fun of this is making her want to keep the gifts-- along with the required fripperies that go along with, a necklace or two and stockings and undergarments, if only because the face mattie will make at him including them will be truly hilarious. also included are two hats, because damon never does anything half-way.

on top of the box is a note, written in a flowing, beautiful hand. ]

Ms. Ross--

Still think you know my every planned action? Enjoy the dresses, Tiny.

They walk the rest of the way to the zoo, even though the streetcar stops right out front. Dick likes walking with Mattie-he can keep pace with her without rushing, can lag behind knowing she won't forge on without first throwing a sharp warning his way. The path curves along the lake and it appears through the brush in blue flashes, the water bright and sparkling. He picks up a stick and swipes at leaves and spindly branches, jabs the ground with industrious contentment.

“I see it,” he calls as they come into view of the sign. Tossing the stick aside, he breaks into a run.

Mattie doesn't call him back, just makes sure that doesn't appear to be heading out of her line of sight. It's nice to see Dick excited about something, as quiet and withdrawn as he seems so much of the time. She supposes she's used to people like her own family, like herself, who aren't afraid to make their opinions known. It's bad that the little boy has had that natural urge suppressed, she thinks.

Shaking off the moment of contemplation, Mattie can't resist breaking into a run as well, to catch up. She's only a girl in a lot of ways herself, still.

"We will have to climb the fence once we get inside, I bet," she offers. "To get to the horses. You know how to ride, right?"

Dick hears her shoes pounding the path, waits for her to come within a few strides and starts to really run, a headlong sprint that leaves everything but his own exhilaration behind. He stops when his lungs burn and his legs feel rubbery. He wears a smile so relaxed, so exhausted it looks at the point of slipping off his face. All the energy he has left goes into not flopping down on the grass.

He has to nod several times before he can gasp out, “'Course.” The entrance gate's right up ahead; unsteadily he resumes walking. “We should've brought apples.”

Mattie actually laughs when he takes off racing, and she puts her own extra effort into it. Dick has a lead on her but he doesn't beat her by much (Mattie isn't the kind of girl who never learned to run or climb trees). She does resist tackling him like she might have with Little Frank, though.

"Yes we should have," she agrees, as they head toward and then through the gate, but with a sly little smile she looks sideways at Dick and then fishes something from her pocket. "I guess we will have to make do with the sugar cubes I brought."
