Some RL yay and yet MORE fandom *yawn*

I had a meeting today with the daily paper's main editor and some local charity people to do a series of about 15 human interest feature profiles this fall for Sunday papers September through November. It's my normal freelance rate, but it's extra money and better, it's a chance to write creatively, which I don't get to do much for money anymore (I ( Read more... )

I called it "the one where everyone backstabs everyone else" and I still call it that.

megansleevwillo neatly summarized everyone's relationship to everyone else as, "You scratch my back, I'll stab yours." XD

I don't feel qualified to really comment on the fanfiction stuff, since other than my monosyllabic parody (and the occasional Norryfic), I don't read much of it. :P That said, I agree that it's stupid to villianize a character in order to easily dismiss them; a real writer would allow the characters to keep their integrity instead of deprotagging them into oblivion because it's more "convenient" for their plot purposes. You'll have a better story if your characters are behaving in a realistic fashion... which seems really obvious, but plenty of fanpoodles place plot over character.

Some screenwriters do, too. ;-)

Already replied on JackxWill, but whatevs. :P

I was disappointed the first time I saw DMC. I was really let down because I had remained spoiler free the whole time and had this explosive mixture of excitement and dread brewing in me, but then totally deflated on the ride home from the movie.

Second time I saw it, I didn't hate Elizabeth nearly as much as I did the first time around and I saw more justification for all the backstabbing and manipulation. And like you said, I noticed this time around that Jack was actually trying to get Will back after giving him to Jones! I was just sitting there like "how did I miss that ( ... )

Gee, you think maybe it has something to do with Johnny feeling like "Father Time with a pretty young girl" in his island scene with Keira? (Taken directly from movie commentary.) And they didn't even DO anything in that one. Even the best actor can only get past so much squick. It's true that Christina Ricci is only a few years older than Keira, but for some men, that could mean the difference between "OK, I don't mind kissing her" and "It's like frenching my daughter." (Yeah, yeah, age isn't supposed to matter in acting - BOLLOCKS. We all let personal shit interfere with our work sometimes.) I'm also pretty sure there's a large difference between being 22 years older than a 30-year-old and being 22 years older than a 19-year-old.

You know, I've been thinking about this a lot and Johnny Depp is a great actor. I can only assume that the directors ASKED him to play this down. That this is only a vehicle for some angsty Will/Elizabeth scene down the road where true love finally triumphs. That she didn't mean to kiss him, that she only kissed him to lash him to the ship. Really clumsy storytelling and a rather infantile plot device (among MANY). I honestly believe that if Johnny Depp was told to make that scene hot, they would have had medics standing the aisles of the movie theaters from all the fangirls having heat stroke. I think it's more lameass directing in a lameass movie.

I am, for the record, so vehemently anti-canon-J/E that Verbinski could have had them fucking on the deck, convincingly, and I would've glared at the screen, not getting anything vicarious from it at all. Which is odd, because I can usually handle *any* 'ship. But you can see I have an extra coldness toward that scene beyond your observation that while she was giving his tonsils a good sucking, Jack was clearly giving the kiss only minimal participation.

Still ... I'm not sure that should matter. If they're both hot, shouldn't the resulting kiss set fire to the screen no matter how little effort is going into it? Do you have any doubt that any mouth kiss, no matter how chaste or minimal, between Jack and Will would be anything less than heatwave-inducing? ;-)

I was digging up spoilers left & right before I saw DMC and while I strayed from reading the actual script, I had enough photos, clips, BTS videos, and other bits n pieces to put together a general storyline and what I was going to expect ( ... )

Anyway, that whole "what about Jack, I can't leave without him!" gave me hope that there would be a lot of Jack/Will moments and they'd work together up until the end.

And then you find out it's just that he can't leave without that damn compass.

I am highly amused at the side effect of the formula the writers are using in this triology for Will/Elizabeth (assuming they do end up together). First, you get the lovers together in a way that makes the audience root for them as a couple. Next, you shake them up, break them apart, make them question their mutual devotion in a way that makes the audience anxious to know they WILL be back in each other's arms eventually. Finally, you get them BACK together, stronger than before because they've been tested, and make your audience happy.

... Except you could substitute "Jack" for "Elizabeth" in the above and come out with the same result.

*snicker* I really want movies and series to look at the damn slash fans, you know? It would bring thousands and thousands of people excitedly running to check it out. I wish someone would be brave enough to do it. *sigh* And with Orlando and Johnny both making hilarious slashy comments it makes me nuts, wanting more of that to show up on screen. =p

Hee. There was, admittedly, not much of J/W in DMC... but Jack did try to get him back from Jones, so Will's certainly important. The slashy vibes I got... was between Jones and Will. *cough*

There was so much perving. Of course, others might not see it that way, but, for example, why was Jones so pissy he didn't get to keep Will as Bootstrap lost the game? He still got a soul for all eternity, so he hardly lost anything. Could just be that he still "lost" the chance for adding an (eternal) member to the crew. But I saw the perving all three times, so, eh. :D;

I figured Davy Jones just doesn't like to lose, especially to a mortal and especially to what he considers a boy. Add to that the fact that it was Jack Sparrow who sent Will over, and it'd be a double knife-twist in the gut to be bested in a game before your crew.

*snort* Yes, that's most probably it, *nod* but what's the fun in that? xD;

lol. There are so many pervy pairings to get out of this one. =p The potential Beckett pairings make me grimace, yet the vibes are certainly there. Davy Jones also has that same sort of effect. I'm not drawn to any of the pairings, but I could see them happening off to the side and playing a part in many fanfics. =p~
