Eddies buffeted, threatening to pull his grip from the helm, ship nose-down.
Dear sweet Jesus, his mind flailed, body resisting inhalation. The last five months burned clearly.
Gold and white.
Iron bars.
Tentacles.
Innocent wood cracking in a way God hadn’t intended.
Does God oversee this? He inhaled, expecting crushing burn.
Instead, a swell of anger he hadn’t exercised flared with successful breaths, and he felt the ship’s descent slow, right itself. He looked to the surface, jaw set, veins pumping with brackish water.
He would not go quietly into that good night.
“Up,” he growled, feet planted.
