How fun! If you decide to have Ben paint the mat, I recommend using light yellow instead of blue. Painting it blue could make Ben and his shirt recede into one big blue color. Yellow paint, however, will pick up the colors in the background of the photo, while still enabling Ben to be the focal point of the whole thing.
I bet you could get good ones that weren't too smudged or messy. I think that is a really cool idea.
This makes me wonder, though--have you introduced art supplies to Ben? Has he already done some finger painting? I am wondering if that is something we should think about trying with Lyle sometime soon, or if he's still too young for it.
I personally haven't but he's fingerpainted on occasion (mainly Christmas and Valetines) at daycare for the past few months
You should totally do it! its a blast! At DC, they cover the entire table with paper, then have them paint the heart/star/whatever. One time they just did the table paper and that was a blast, too
