Dreamwidth, part 2

Apr 17, 2009 13:49

So, after my shameless post begging for a Dreamwidth invite yesterday, I woke up this morning to an email with a Dreamwidth invite, because I was chosen at random from all the people who created and validated an OpenID account over there. So, yay, I have a Dreamwidth account now, too ( Read more... )

Hi twin! I've added you to my circle.

I stayed as vilakins too, though I could have had nicola or nico; people know me as vilakins and it's easier to find me under that ID.

I'm not planning to leave either, but it's the best alternative I've seen, and I may meet new people there. :-)

Hi twin! I've added you to my circle.

Hi! I saw! ♥ And I'm glad you stayed vilakins, because it did make it much easier to figure out who you were. :)

Also, I like your idea of importing new entries once in a while, to get the comments from LJ to DW! It's certainly better than locking comments on LJ and forcing people to comment on DW, which I really don't want to do.

I wonder what would happen if I tried to do that with cross-posted entries, though. I suspect it would pull in the whole entry from LJ, which would result in duplicate entries. Hm... I don't know - I do want to try cross-posting, but I don't like the idea of having duplicate entries like that. I'll have to think about that a bit.

I'm not planning to leave either, but it's the best alternative I've seen, and I may meet new people there. :-)Yes, exactly. It's the best alternative I've seen, and I want to see it succeed. Plus, I really admire the amount of thought that clearly went into DW. This isn't just another LJ clone - it's a labor of love for its creators, and ( ... )

I love the terminology (no more "friends" and associated drama) and the designers are very friendly and accessible. I asked Denise about importing, and she says that new posts and comments come across, but not edited posts or comments, which is fair enough. So cross-posts shouldn't be duplicated. I think I will in fact cross-post and regularly import comments. In fact I shall test that now to see if I'm right.

Cross-posting to multiple journals is easy in Semagic. Up till now I've only used it when I've needed to do a lot of HTML.

Hmm. I tested a second import and it did indeed duplicate my cross-posted entry as you suspected. It also didn't bring across new comments from existing entries. I shall have to report that bug.

So maybe I'll just import every few days and not cross-post till they have that sorted.

Using that name does still make me feel sort of silly, since it has so little to do with how I think of myself, but I've also sort of gotten used to it by now, and I've always been very resistant to change.

That is exactly how I feel about my username. I contemplated going for a new one, but it just felt like--I've been penmage for so long, I am not sure I'm reading to be someone new.

Oh, but I really like the name "penmage"! I love the image that brings to mind of using the pen to do magical things. :)

But yeah, I know exactly what you mean. For me, choosing the name "veritykindle" on LJ was more or less an accident, because I had thought at the time that my usual nickname was taken. But these days, choosing another name would still feel almost like rejecting my LJ identity, and I don't want to do that. (And yet, I'd feel very weird if anyone actually called me that in person. Online identities are strange! :) )

So will you religiously crosspost? cause the RSS feed for dreamwidth actually supports cuts properly so it's actively better for me than the LJ one.

Well, I've been going back and forth on this subject a bit, because of the current difficulty with importing comments on cross-posted posts from LJ to DW. I like the idea of having all my comments in one place, and I really don't want to lock comments anywhere... But if it's better for you if I cross-post everything, then I will cross-post everything. DW is promising to make it much easier to cross-post really soon, and it's not like it's that hard to copy and paste everything in the meantime ( ... )
