I like how you used time here. The jumps really gave this a feeling of inevitability that added to the impact of a broken resolution. Excellently done!
This strongly evoked something like Benoite Groult's 'Salt On Our Skin' in my mind, which is admittedly one of the only romance novels I've ever read, but a damn good, quite literary one. I think the key was probably in that adept balance of sensual detail, psychological insight, and sense of the passage of time. Loved it!
