We invent our own mythology, most of the time. Mysteries leave clues, and we tell a story that puts them together. There's actually quite a bit in the bookshops--I've been reading them all month. But, well. Not everyone who gets here writes a book. So, I thought--stories were originally passed down by word of mouth anyway. The network might be a ( Read more... )

I don't think you have to be bored to look for good company, do you?

[Jamie is awake! But barely. He's sort of still half asleep, but intelligently enough, forgot to turn his device off properly. And so keeps getting woken up by random transmissions.

He yawns widely as he grabs blindly for his device on the bedside table. Yes, he is that lazy.] Probably not, really. But I guess some people here might be nocturnal. [Like you, obviously, Alan.]

It's all right. I'm awake now. [There's a pause as he shuffles a little to get into a sitting position. Jamie feels a bit out of his depth talking about books, but... well, he'll do his best.] Did you read any interesting stories?

Well, it was interesting to me. [ mouth quirking. ] There isn't much in the way of football mythology, unfortunately.

[He's a night-owl, early morning posts don't bother him.]

A philosophy I can agree with.

Putting stories together? Or not asking about them so early in the morning?

The former. I am something of a bookworm myself.

[that's all nice and lovely, Alan, but why do you post this - posts come up with ping! sounds and wake Mae up before she has to be up (which is...later) - and there's a silent rustle of covers being pulled closer.]

There was once a boy named Alan who was in the habit of not sleeping when the other people were sleeping and then his fabulous housemate almost considered spiking his dinner with those little pills that knock you out. Except she doesn't, because she's a nice girl that way...

Actually, I think it's usually the other way around.

[ smiling a little, ridiculously, and still talking in that soothing tone like Mae stands a chance of falling asleep while listening to it. ]

Yeah, but I don't know if stories from other worlds would make a lot of sense.

I guess it depends on how different other worlds are. I don't think it can be beyond explanation, anyway.
