Some of it will be comparing to other types, but the focus is on the character and what makes her in charge. How research/buzz has been done about the Alpha Male, but in the UF and PR genres, there are plenty of alpha females ( Read more... )

What if they are secondary characters? Dresden Files has quite a few Alpha Females. Murphy, Mab, Charity...

Storm Front I can tell you about after tomorrow. I have to read it for the class. I just keep wanting to rock falls Harry every time he speaks or thinks. (Oops. I don't think that's the point.) It's a required reading for the same class. I have some notes on Murphy already, and I'd definitely say she's very...alpha so far. But I'm only on page 66.

She stays that way, ngl all the women in the series are BAMFS. Also Lara Raith. Fucking amazing.

So far, I like the seducing lady that keeps Harry off his game. I like that idea. So the women are very....dominant, alpha?

There's Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake & Merry Gentry.

Is Anita? The last time I read her, she was juggling men but didn't seem to do much else. Any specific examples beyond the first book and Cerulean Sins, the two I've read? And I know Merry's a fairy, right? I don't know much past that.

Butcher's other series, Codex Alera has a serious alpha female and several other minor chars that are BAMF as well. Tavi wouldn't survive half of what he does without the women in his life saving his ass time and again.

Have you considered Kitty Norwood from the Kitty werewolf series by Carrie Vaughn? She is starts off pretty generic female, but by the fourth or fifth book she is literally the Alpha of her pack.

Will hunt around for some links. Interesting topic!
