How you gonna R if your legs won't run?

I've been intending for ages to write up another entry covering where I am in the great Knee Injury Saga. This is principally for my own future reference, and I don't recommend it for your reading entertainment.

The short version: I'm recovering from the surgery, but considerably more slowly than hoped/expected. I don't have a particular timeline ( Read more... )

Better out than in??

That does sound horribly frustrating - and although eventual recovery is good, it does mean that you're not trying to figure out a new life, just marking time until you get your old one back.

Yes! That comment about the old/new life is an excellent way of putting it. Obviously I'm incredibly pleased to be able to look forward to full recovery, but it does have its own set of frustrations!

The fact that you are not hitting the timepoints is normal: One of the mantras that cuthbertcross mentioned from her training was that a consultant would describe what a classic case of x was, and then repeat - "Remember what 'classic' means? It means 'hardly ever happens'!". We are a horribly diverse species, injuries and illnesses are unique, and together that makes predicting outcomes with any confidence almost impossible. It will recover as it recovers.

And you have my sympathy for the fact that knowing this does not make the slow progress any less frustrating. Best of luck!!

On another note, my girls have recently been trying to hit their knees to stimulate the kick reflex (using the toy plastic doctor's kit, which is rubbish). They would love a go with the 'cattle prod'!!

I guess I'm just more... classic than usual ;)

I was attacked with a cattle prod again this morning. Good news, it only had to go up to 6 to get a response!

That's really good progress, from 9 to 6. Go nerves!

I had my back all-clear this month and the (new) consultant noted that I still don't have any reflexes in my ankles, and not enough reflex response in my knees, and that my scar is still Not Quite Right and visibly damaged internally and externally - but in post-surgery land all of these things are "actually, pretty good in the scheme of things". :) Exploding stitches and non-twitching legs are, at this point, still pretty good in the scheme of things...

Good news on the back all-clear, though I take it this is separate from the shoulder?

You're right, really, that all is well but I'm unused to longer-term injury and it's hard to accept!

OMG it all sounds perfectly horrible, but on the upside, you created Purest Green...

Well, it was more yellow-y... wait, you didn't want to know that ;)

The worst part is that I have come to regard running on a treadmill as aspirational!

That all does sound very frustrating (and messy!). Hope the current improvement continues and the various bits stop conspiring against you.

Thank you! I am endeavouring to root out the conspiracies :)

:-(

I'm sorry it's taking ages. Do either of the two Thursday options work better for you in light of this (technically three options but I think Ashford is the worst of all worlds here).

Either of the two is fine with me. I was assuming Isleworth, if only Isleworth-vertex would be more forthcoming ;)

I'm hopeful that your latest email might encourage a little more communication from that vertex!
