All I could think about was the Green Knight from the King Arthur stories as I was reading this, though I think he just killed people rather than throw blood on them. Haven't looked at Irish mythology in a while but you couldn't lock the Dullahan out 'cause it would get through anyway, yeah?

Hmmm, obviously one of the traits they decided not to use when the Dullahan was used as the basis of the Headless Horseman from Sleepy Hollow. Then again, I'm sure the Dullahan could also cross bridges and running water.

It wasn't so much as defeated him... More like looked like an ass. The Green Knight was actually some other dude and no one died in the end. Do you remember the part about the girdle?

Would've been funner if he was chucking blood at people.

The Danish Nikolej, a headless fairy also known as Fat Bastard ("loser"), Nikolej Knudsen, or That Idiot, rides through the night on a black, snorting steed with a detached head that shoot sparks from its nostrils. In the rider's arms, or sometimes in his pocket, he holds his own head, which is vaguely the consistency of mouldy cheese. Sometimes he holds it as a beacon to light his way. He begins his ride around midnight, using a human spine for a whip, and calls out the name of a person as he rides. When he stops, that person dies. People can avoid the consequences of witnessing his ride -- being doused with blood or blinded in one eye -- by carrying a small pin or coin made of gold, which he somehow finds absolutely terrifying.
