Not Cold At All
Lindsay had never been a touchy-feely kind of person. Looking back to her childhood, she could remember few demonstrations of open affection between her parents and while her father had been a loving, generous person, it had never been his way to hug or kiss his daughter. And as for her mother - well, she had never been one for displaying affection, period.
As Lindsay grew up, this undemonstrative upbringing left its mark. She didn’t hug her friends and it had taken her some time to be comfortable with the idea of any physical closeness with her boyfriends, even if it was just an arm around her shoulder. More than one had called her frigid and the reputation stuck with her in high school - making her even more uncomfortable with the whole idea.
As an adult, Lindsay never felt capable of touching people casually. A quick hug, a supportive pat on the shoulder - she didn’t mind being the recipient of such touches, although her immediate reaction was to stiffen at the invasion of her personal space. Touching other people though - she always felt awkward making such gestures. There were times when she wanted to touch, wanted to help or comfort, but unless it was for purely practical purposes, she just wasn’t comfortable with touching others. And generally, she was alright with that, not very happy about it, but accepting it as part of her personality.
Aiden was the complete opposite. She was always touching people and Lindsay was finding that she rather liked it. When they met up one evening, having plans to make dinner together at Aiden’s apartment, Aiden greeted her with a warm hug and a kiss on the cheek. Lindsay felt no impulse to stiffen in reaction, instead returning the affectionate gestures with pleasure. They went to the local market and Aiden joked with the grocer, cuffing him lightly on the shoulder in mock reprimand. As they walked back to the apartment, Aiden had one arm draped casually across Lindsay’s shoulders. They started preparing dinner, bumping into each other in the small kitchen and laughing, Aiden touching Lindsay’s hip lightly to direct her away from the cupboard she was trying to reach. While the dinner was simmering on the stove, Lindsay sat down at the table to examine the letters she had taken from her mailbox that morning and hadn’t yet looked at. As she muttered over the latest electricity bill, Aiden came over, resting one hand on her shoulder, as she looked to see what was making Lindsay mutter. As she leaned forward, her hair brushed against Lindsay’s neck, making Lindsay shiver.
“You cold?” Aiden asked, noticing the shiver.
Lindsay smiled inwardly. “Not at all.”
