Vinyl caftan, paper dresses! Would you creak & crackle while wearing them?

But still, I have some small hope that the stiff, modernist tailoring will be all over the high street come fall, dispelling the boho shlupp.

Years ago I heard that "the UK and Europe are two years ahead of the US with regards to what's in style." Is that true? Two years, I can hardly believe it. Maybe on the runway, but in the stores?

I'm not sure how fashion forward London is. It's sad. Definitely the Oxford St. Top Shop is full of fab stuff,

But I can't even go near any places in Sloane Square like Biba, etc. Unlike LA where if you have dreads, etc. you might be in a band, here it just means you are poor. Class is a big thing here-- it's more culture shock, really; another thing to get used to-- being seen as "common."

Most of the high street stores are hideous, and compared to even Target in the US, are nowheresville interms of style. It's sad. Even H&M feels constantly off to me.

The paper dresses, which the curation states were sold as souvenirs of "swinging London"-- seem almost like a joke-- a paper dress in rainy London? You'd be naked in no time! The vinyl dress would be very sensible in the rain, though. Hehe.

God, seeing that mary quant dress reminded me of when I used to make 60's style clothes for friends of mine out of clingfilm and offcut rubber. Your posts always bring out a nostalgia in me for an artistic past I never really had.

The clingfilm dress! An 80's staple, like the rubbish bin liner dress.

I miss those whacky times-- people had more of a sense of humor about what they wore.

Ah, the FeeJee mermaid. Another fabulous P.T. Barnum ruse.

This way to the Egress!

It's such a strange object and there is little information in the museum to illuminate it. By context I take it to be part of Sloane's orginal collection, like the "naturally occuring" dice, etc.

I always visit it. It seems horrified at itself, and by extension, its perverse creator.

Barnum had his moments, like the cherry-colored cat and the Man Eating Chicken! Cheeky audacious man.

I think the mermaid might look more terrifying because of its long time aging. I can't imagine it looking much better when it was fresh, but the passing years have given it something of a mystique.

i adore the neckpieces!

i am dying for a washing machine/dryer of my own again! it's been almost three years and i totally wish i had one again so i could felt and dye things again. *sigh* i don't think i'll be getting one of my own for a long time, either...as i'll probably be moving into a similarly small, non-outfitted SF apt... :(

If you like the neckpieces, then I know I've done something right! Thanks.

You know, every flat we looked at here had this combo washer/dryer. I never had an apartment outfitted like that in the US, but here it's standard.

The only thing is that the way these are built it's hard to open them mid cycle-- this one was over felted (a wanted something a bit more delicate) and I just decided to work with it the way it turned out and kind of mold it into shape, let it be what it wanted to be.
