I've tried to watch the Vampire Diaries, and I think I finally get why I can't. It's not that I have a hatred of problematic romances... it's that none of the characters seem to be trying to accomplish anything other than live from day to day.

And here I ramble about the obvious )

I find it kinda annoying too. You'd think that there would be more going on other than gossip. I mean, the characters don't even have hobbies. They don't have hopes or dreams. They don't have philosophies. They aren't even interested in anything other that gossiping about each other, and no one is actually doing anything worthy of gossiping about. I mean, gossip is fun when there's something juicy, but all the time ( ... )

that said, I like that with vampires, their is always history and baggage. I like with the vampires in tvd that there is love, need, hatred, and all the petty feelings in between. sometimes the rest of the characters are like props in their drama. clearly the props have their own plays, but I usually ignore those! I'm not sure if this is why other people like tvd, but from the number of stefan / damon slash floating around, it may be one of the attractions...
