Would anyone please rec me fics that you found particularly emotionally moving/gripping. Plot, situation and pairing are not important. I'm not reading this for pleasure, but rather to parse technique and understand the mechanics of the craft better.

Anyway um, here's some I pulled off SS that I recall having affected me very strongly. All single chapter stories, though I can't remember how long any of them are:

Maypirate's Overlap
- For me, the culmination when they finally managed to have sex? Was full of absolute beauty and made me remember why sex could be about love again and not just porn.

Anax's Rust Within Their Throats
- This was a very raw, visceral, tore my heart out OH MY GOD fic. It made me fear RoyEd for a time.

Only like a week, but eheheh.

Ephemeris by Mikke
- I still regard this as one of my favorite Hei/Ed fics ever. Alfons quietly dying and holding on to Ed as a lifeline is very simple but poignant here.

Things I am completely aware affect me for personal reasons
Mikke's Closing Time
- I grew up with a brother (NOT YAMA) who had substance abuse issues. Mikke captures the phenomenon so perfectly that eheheh, I found it nearly impossible to read this fic XD It was so true it hurt.

this one is non fandom but messes me up every time i read it, because one of them dies just after the fic is finished, and if you've seen the anime it just kills you,

the series is very good, but a lot hinges around this death and what the other does in reaction and so it broke my heart, but it's a very simple fic and it's the one i use most often when i'm writing angst as a model so i thought it would help.
