Would anyone please rec me fics that you found particularly emotionally moving/gripping. Plot, situation and pairing are not important. I'm not reading this for pleasure, but rather to parse technique and understand the mechanics of the craft better.

Shorter works please.

pimp, fic

Anything by iscaris usually have the ability to wring my heart:

Okay. This one is really, really long, so you might want to skip it, but it made me cry. On several occasions.

Emotionally gripping, and not too long. Some of the ones I would have named are already here. Okay, here goes (all FMA fandom, of course):

Ubi Sunt Gaudia? by nebroadwe. Beautiful fic. Gen; Hei and Ed.

Rat's Alley by hansbekhart, Roy/Ed. Gut-wrenching, desperate; set during a war.

Weakness by mikkeneko. Gen, prisonfic, and makes my heart pound every time I read it.

Horehound Drops (Roy/Ed/Al) and House Of Flowers (Elricest) by sutlers. I adore both of these stories with all of my heart.

And this one that cryogenia just wrote: The Faint Lumens Of Counterglow. Gen; Hei and Ed. So very lovely and touching.

I've read some of these, but I'll re-read them again with an eye for emotion. Thanks for pointing it out.

Pianissimo Butterfly by Angrybee is by far one of my favourites, and always will be. Besides the plot, her writing style for this was stunning. The fandom is Gravitation.

Charade is more plot driven, but for a simpler writing style, dripping with plausible characterizations, this fic inspired my own writing and the tones I wish to set forth. Also Gravitation. The author is Flamingolo.

Not familiar with Gravitation, but I'll read them as if they were orriginal fic.

I suppose the only things you should know to follow along easier is that 'Nittle Grasper' and 'Bad Luck' are the two most popular bands in Japan.

Grasper consists of Tohma, Noriko and Ryuichi, and Bad Luck is Shuuichi, Hiroshi, and Suguru. Yuki Eiri (AKA Eiri Uesugi) is an author, and Shuuichi's lover.

How about...

No One's Home by moon_maiden36 FMA- An ending to the Elric brothers I never saw coming.

In the Shadow of Four Walls by guanin FMA- It was the pairing that brought this story to my attention at first.

rainjoyous recently churned out a lot of fics for her NaNo project, including a sweet little trilogy that holds just about my favorite fic of hers, called Kiss Me Like You Mean It. It comes right in the middle, between Two Kinds of People and Promises of Eternity.

And yes, Anax's Rust Within Their Throats will always be my first love, as far as fic is concerned. It's a punch to the guts, every time.
