This story I'm writing. Agh.

Jan 04, 2009 22:44

I've written about 7000 words of a fic that's a sequel of sorts to the two Bioses, but gah, even if I do finish this some day, I'm still not sure posting it would be a good idea. Some reasons for this ( Read more... )

I'd read it. Even the depressing part or the lack of action, or the lack of romance.. yeah, actually the focus on the characters is exactly what I like to read. Emotional/mental health is a difficult subject with characters too because everyone's intrupretations (that's spelled horribly) are different. It depends on the story, it depends on how the author sees the characters, it depends on the character.. etc. I'd like to read it though.

"Interpretations" is the correct spelling, right? :) And yay, "focus on the characters", I never even thought about that. Yes, I think this story definitely has it. Character-focused. I guess you could even describe it as a character study of sorts (aside from it being a medical thriller). Cool, somehow call it that way makes it feel less pointless, somehow. Thanks for the encouragement! :)

That's the one, interpretations. Most fanfic that I've noticed definitely falls under the character study category. Because let's face it, it's the characters that we're drawn to. The plot isn't that important except in much much longer stories. Like novels. I'm writing a long one that broke the 50 page mark, which is a first for me, and plot is pretty essential there because otherwise it would be weird. I mean I suppose you could do it.. a plotless long story, and then you can take a writing class from the teacher that I just had and didn't like because he liked all the stuff that I hate. Anyway. Shorter ones, the plot is just a device to make the characters react, so it's secondary, it's about how the characters deal with it, so the focus has to be on them, which generally makes it a character study. Even if the events in the plot are totally weird, there's still how the characters deal with it and react to it and that's what's interesting, that's what all of us want to read. I definitely want to read this one, I like ( ... )

Write it. Write it just for yourself, if you'd prefer, but I'd like to read it. I love medical stuff, and if I couldn't suspend my disbelief I don't think I'd be too into Iron Man in the first place. The more medical details the better. One of my main characters is an orthopedic surgeon, so you can imagine he has a lot of work to do with Tony Stark, but god knows I don't check everything medical that I put into my RPs.

Character interpretations are fascinating and I love seeing your takes on these people. I want to see how they deal when you push their limits. And if you're worried about doing things that are too mean, believe me when I say, and btsxbeta can back me up on this, no matter what you do to your characters mentally and emotionally, I have done worse. Worse than that. Oh, much worse than that.

Bottom line: tedious is a matter of opinion. The Andromeda Strain is one of my favorite Michael Crichton books and my husband can't get through the first 20 pages of it. So...we can haz?

Oh yeah, I'm going to write it, I'm pretty sure about that - I'm too obsessed to stop now. The question is what I'll do with it once it's finished. This is just me worrying too much as usual, you know... With four people out here who're rising their hands and saying they'd like to read, I'm probably going to risk posting it, too.

About doing mean things, yeah, well, I always think I'm doing extreme stuff, only to learn that nah, it's not really that extreme. I guess you can always get even meaner. Still, this story is pretty extreme for me. Extreme enough that it scares me a bit. Ah, well.

I'm willing to beta. :)

Although, me being me, I might come up with even meaner things to do to them. And suggest them. And it might help to see if someone else thinks their reactions are believable.

I love genfic, and you're a good writer, so I want to read it in any case.

Oh dear, yeah, I can imagine you could come up with more ways to hurt them (although in Tony's case, at this point, it'd be a bit difficult without making any sort of a recovery pretty much unrealistic) - but nah, I've got them where I want them, no need to break them more than that. ;) Thanks for the beta offer, but I'll decline - as I said, it's just... Meh. This'll have to do as it is, or not at all. Knowing myself, I'll probably end up posting it anyway. :)

Please publish it, I love hurt comfort involving Iron Man! If you want to send it to me privately, Magic_Amethyst80@yahoo.com. I'm dying to read it. If you need suggestions on how it should end, or just about anything I would be willing to help out.

Honestly, nowadays you are the only author I read regularly, and I anxiously await anything you write and live for your Iron Man Hurt/Comfort.

-It's ridiculously angsty, and I think it's more depressing than the stuff in Cryobiosis or Iron & Irony. Also, I don't think I've ever brought my characters this close to the edge when it comes to emotional/mental health, and I've no idea if I'm doing it right, or if their behavior is even marginally believable.

I like angst, and I like seeing characters close to the edge! You are covering new ground, and it is okay to be nervous. I think with a character like Tony Stark, you have to take him to the edge sometimes.

There isn't a whole lot of action in the story except for the very beginning, nor is there any romance, because this is a gen ( ... )

Hee, no need to get so desperate, there's a very good chance I'll end up posting this anyway. Too curious to see what people will think about it.

I guess I just needed to vent a bit because this story is sort-of driving me nuts, and because I'm afraid I'll end up doing something I have done before, which is messing up a story because I get too caught up with the medicine. I've done it with a few otherwise perfectly nice Stargate-fics, which would've been better and more balanced with a bit less ER in them. On the other hand, this is a very different story than any of those, I planned it as one that mostly takes place in the hospital, and so on.

Anyway, thanks for the kind words. :)

I'm sure I will enjoy it, and if this is a fic where most of it takes place in the hospital, I'm sure there won't be too much ER.

You know I'd read it veldeia. Don't worry about the reception, it looks we are the only ones out there with a need for h/c and medical drama. :D

I'm just always amazed there are any people besides myself out there who like this sort of stuff. :)

I think it is uncharted territory as far as fandom goes. For those who like shipping, there is plenty out there, for those who like slash, there is plenty of that as well.

But I think for some reason hurt/comfort seems to get overlooked in a lot of fandoms, and the majority of fans like pure slash, or pure NC-17 gen pairings.

Also as Agilebrit pointed out in a thread over on her journal, Tony is a rare character where there is just so much potential in terms of hurt/comfort.
