Yay for the Carey books. I thought there was a slight sense of diminishing returns about the third one, but only slight. Sadly it looks like the fourth one's been pushed back to next March.

I must get around to watching Dexter since everyone reckons it's great. The Wire is of course fantastic. S4 is very rich and satisfying if you can build up the momentum!

I think the thing I really enjoyed so far with the Carey books is the sense that Castor is discovering the possibilities and limitations (or lack thereof) of his world as the reader is. Too many series books like this start with a premise, then the author starts writing more of them, and has to expand the world, and as a reader you end up reading about all this cool new stuff and wondering why it never got mentioned in earlier books. It makes it too obvious that this world is being constructed by the author - like seeing the wizard behind the curtain. Carey has created a knowledgeable guide for us, but he's also made Castor ignorant of everything that's going on, so that it seems much more natural that the way the world works is discovered and revealed rather than just presented as a done deal. If any of that makes sense ( ... )
