mmm, i'm gonna miss not having to do schoolwork once the summer ends. it's been so nice hanging out with chad and heather all summer since JBA. the three of us are road-tripping to columbia this sunday just to "get out of kirksville." and it's great fun going and helping with her horses. huggy and riley are so pretty! and crazy

You made me think of something - when I was falling asleep last night, I started musing about the word "I" and how our capitalization of it almost makes it seem like a symbol. And when I see people write it as "i", then it looks like a letter. But when I read "I" it just comes across like a kanji character or something.
Yeah, when you fall asleep though, you don't necessarily have your best ideas...

Basically, hiragana is used for grammar (like showing the tense on a noun that's otherwise made up of kanji), while katakana is used for words borrowed from other languages. It's a little more complicated than that, but that's the general idea.
