Since I'm not promoting a blog, I don't think this is breaking the rules. I want opinions ( Read more... )

Oooh, good idea! I like it! I would look for specialty food use and simplicity. While I don't mind taking 3 hours to make a meal, I also want it to be made from ingredients I can find at the store.

So, a definite vote on 3.

I suppose I would need to take a vote on what people considered "Special Appliances."

I try to to think of what a college student would have access to, or what I first moved out of my mother's house with.

Being in a small town, and hating small and cheaply made appliances, it was always the basics of ingredients, a cutting board, and a chef knife with a couple of pots/pans.

There are a lot of blogs that have 'cook the books' features, and there's a blog called Meet the Shannons where a family cooks through the original red and white Betty Crocker cookbook. ThePPK has posts about nearly everything that's come out of any book that Isa has written.
Google "vegan mofo" and you'll find a lot of vegan blogs that way. Or check out vegancrunk, getsconedpdx, have cake will travel, justthefood, fatfreevegan, etc. The only blog I know of that is totally dedicated to cooking the books 100% of the time is Meet the Shannons, most other bloggers post food from books or recipes they've modified from books. There are never enough vegan bloggers. Create your own spin and make yours personal! I have a very simple blog that just posts eats, musings and fun recipes. http://laceylovesfood.wordpress.com and i have a few great links on the right of the blog if you want to go looking around :)

Oh wow! I so subscribed to Meet the Shannons, even if they've made reference to store bought mock meat. I'll be checking all of these out. ^^

One of the things I like to know is how many recipes are quick to cook (under 30 minutes or under an hour).

speed vegan might be worth checking out. Also, I think 90% of the happy herbivore recipes take 30 min or less to make.

Awesome!

Definitely originality of recipes, since I've seen way too many vegan cookbooks with recipes for pretty obvious things, so much so that the cookbook isn't even worth the money (for example, PETA's vegan cookbook..it has a friggin PB&J recipe!!)

PETA cooking = fail amolibertas August 2 2011, 13:55:02 UTC
I think I remember that! PETA's vegan cookbook wasn't a purchase, but a library check out; Very unimpressed!

I mean, the only thing that can trip you up there is to make sure your bread isn't fortified with D3. Psh.

Skinny Bitch's cookbook really isn't that much better. Have you ever looked at that one?

oh my gosh. This cookbook just used a page on how to make guacamole.

Really? I learned that when I learned PB&J

Haha! yeah! my boyfriend got that as a gift from his omni sister.. very sweet and thoughtful, so I feel bad that I we couldn't get much use out of it, but it was good for laughs at least. haha
I've never read Skinny Bitch, actually XD I'm guessing it's similar obvious recipes?

I'm always interested to know what kind of pictures the books have. Not mane vegan cookbooks have lots of pretty photos, but as I use cookbooks more for inspiration than following the recipes closely, I like ones which have nice photos. Bonus points if they have nice design/typesetting etc., but that's not quite as important. So you could include a couple of photos of inside pages?

Pictures ^^ amolibertas August 2 2011, 13:56:44 UTC
I'll be sure to list photos. I don't really like putting up entire recipes so much; but pictures give you an idea of what's inside, and a solid review could make you buy it. Then I'd feel like I was helping the author rather than stealing.

So, this is my start: http://cookingbooksisvegan.wordpress.com

You know, it sounds trite, but picture can be really helpful! I also am curious about the simplicity of the recipes. However, even though I'm a poor college student, I tend to like to be adventurous, and I own some fancy tools like a food processor and a juicer, so I don't know if recipes calling for "fancy kitchen tools" is a detriment. I actually get kind of annoyed when people make a point of making recipes that don't use those things. Why'd I go through all the effort to buy / acquire them when so many people are writing recipes that don't require them!

Also, how about a criteria based on how delicious the recipe is? Just because it's in a cookbook doesn't mean it's good!
