Rallies in D.C.

Whoo-hoo, I am going to the Rally to Restore Sanity in Washington, D.C.!

I have visited D.C. before, but not as a vegan and not for an overnight stay. I looked through some tags and entries, but I didn't see much as far as restaurant recommendations. I am looking for places I should not miss while in town with two other vegan friends. We will be ( Read more... )

For light eats and bakedstuff and nummy sandwiches: http://www.stickyfingersbakery.com/ GO HERE you will not regret it I think it is my single biggest thing I miss about not living in DC anymore!

(Also, man, I'm totally jealous of you, I want to go to the rally so bad but have class that day, alas!)

Oh also Soul Veg (2606 Georgia Ave, NW) has super delicious all-vegan soul food, though I don't know what your politics are cuz the people who run it are really religious and pretty anti-gay and trans which sketches me out about going there sometimes. But uh the food is great!

Hmm, that sounded good until you got to the religious and anti-gay part. Oh, well.

I do have Sticky Fingers bookmarked. It looks like we'd have to explore the Green line to get up there, which I am cool with. If I can handle the MTA in NYC, I figure I can do the Metra.

Fortunately for me it coincided with a 3.5 day weekend (parent-teacher conferences and school improvement days), and the boy doesn't want to go, so he is opting for a Grandma weekend. But, he'd be the coolest 12-year old ever if he went! Somehow, that didn't appeal to him when compared with flying back and forth in roughly 50 hour time frame. :-p

I didn't know that about Soul Veg. :\

Is this common knowledge that I'm just behind on?

You will need a Smart Card for the Metro if you're using a car to go in and out of Metro parking lots during times you have to pay for parking.

How long will you be in town, and how often do you plan on riding the Metro? Haha, that's not too helpful but the only way to figure out how much money to put on your card. If you're worried about losing money and not too worried about standing in lines, I'd say just put a smallish balance on your card ($10 or so) and then stand in lines at the machines at the station to add more (with cash!!! No credit cards taken!!!! Keep this is mind!) if you need it.

I will be arriving on Friday at DCA around 1pm. I do not plan on driving whatsoever, and I leave early on Sunday. I figure I will be riding the rail at least 3-4 times and possibly a bus or two; Two rails trips for the airport and two rail and/or bus for restaurants/sights that are more than a walking distance away.

Good to know that I can't add to the card with a credit card.

You can add to the card with a credit card. There are machines that are cash only, but every station that I have ever been to ever has machines that take credit cards.

If you are planing on taking buses in conjunction with metro, a smarttrip card is definitely the way to go, I think transfers cost less that way.

Yay, I'm going too! And, you must be a fellow Illinoisan for spelling it "Metra" (I do that too haha!)

Hahaha, I thought that it was? Is it Metro? *shrug*

Where are you traveling from/to? Staying? I will be staying with a fellow vegan from CA, and a local vegan is also traveling that way, but staying elsewhere. He wants to meet up at Busboys & Poets for dinner at 7pm Friday. I am sure he is open to others joining in. :)

We're traveling from Midway (we're in Chicago) and will be staying at my boyfriend's dad's (lucky to have fam out there).

We haven't bought our tickets yet, so I'm not exactly sure what time we'll be getting in (might be late), but that sounds great! Let's reconnect when it's closer!
