Atlanta, GA

Next week I'm going down to Atlanta, GA with my mom to visit my brother for 5 days. I need vegan options at restaurants, but my brother is a die-hard meat-eater (and so is his girlfriend, I think) and will definitely not go to a vegetarian-only restaurant. My mom likes to eat vegetarian, but since we're visiting my brother, we need places we can ( Read more... )

R. Thomas is great, especially if you have to accommodate meat eaters. I ate there last night myself....I wouldn't recommend Flying Biscuit. They have a few vegetarian items, but not really much vegan. Publix will do alright for outfitting you with vegan food, but if you get a chance, Sevenanda on Moreland has a bunch of great stuff as well. I've heard awesome things about Pizza Fusion, but haven't been there. Mellow Mushroom also accommodates the whole spectrum of food eaters--the tempeh sandwich with vegan condiments is tasty--and is a little more kid friendly than R. Thomas. If you do get a chance to wonder around yourself, Cafe Sunflower is delicious!

Yes, Cafe Sunflower!

Also check out World Peace Cafe, which is right across the street from a Whole Foods with lots of tasty vegan (as well as meat for your brother..) options. I also love Life Grocery Cafe but that's in Marietta.

I used to love to go the Flying Biscuit, and I would tell my server that I was vegan. They would say, "Oh, the *insert item* that comes with that won't be vegan, but the kitchen could do *other really good food* that would be vegan instead." I love that place, and the food that is vegan kicks ass.

Also, if the OP is in the Decatur area around lunch time, Rainbow Foods has a tiny cafe. It rocks They also have some awesome food prepackaged that you can go off with. The dessert called "It's Good" really is. Rainbow is veggie only, but there are some omni-friendly restaurants in the area that do takeout too, and you could go eat outside down the street in downtown Decatur if the weather is nice.

I should add that the stuff Flying Biscuit was willing to do for me wasn't always quite on the menu. It would probably be a good idea if you go there to call ahead to make sure whoever is working that day is willing to be that nice and that it's not too busy for them.

i <3 r.thomas. i would suggest it just for the atmosphere, though the food (and the tea lattes) are awesome as well. cafe sunflower is pretty good as well, but the atmosphere (imho) is quite lacking compared to r.thomas. my s/o is about the exact opposite of vegan (he mainly lives off of meat and cheese and carbs) and he likes r.thomas. he managed to choke down a veggie burger or something similar at cafe sunflower, but it certainly wasn't his favorite dining experience.

R. Thomas FTW, definitely. I also agree that Cafe' Sunflower is good, but nothing for omnis (like the previous poster commented, my omni husband was only marginally impressed by the veggie burger)... I personally think it's pricey, though. And since it's vegetarian, you'd have to be careful, of course.

The World Peace Cafe' is great... you can't beat the energy there. And the concept of the place is phenomenal. There aren't too many of them around, so it's definitely one of those places you should go just to say you've gone. It's not omni, but I personally think a lot of the pasta dishes are pretty universally awesome.

I've been to Dynamic Dish once, and really liked it, but I'd recommend you call ahead. Because they do locally grown foods only, their menu changes constantly, so you might wanna make sure there are vegan options that day. It's also somewhat questionable how omni-friendly it would be on any given day, for the same reason. I also thought it was a little pricey. But they're good people with good food, for all ( ... )

Dude, you should do the Chow Baby. Reasonable price and tons of veggies, tofu and vegan sauces. It's not even 10 am and now you've got me hungry, dammit.

I would NOT recommend R. Thomas. There are captive birds everywhere in cages outside to face the noise and elements. Don't trust my word, just look at their own pix - http://www.rthomasdeluxegrill.com/photobirds1.htm... )

Y'know, I hadn't even thought about the birds... egad. I've loved R. Thomas since my omni days, and hadn't made that mental shift. Thanks for pointing it out.

And yes, I'll make it a point to try Chow Baby soon! :)

I know it's totally happy looking and colorful/unique, etc, so I went there SEVERAL times as a vegan before going "ooooh yeaaaah".

you MUST check out calabash, if you get a chance. i was just passing through atlana last week and i went there and the food was INCREDIBLE and the people running the place were super nice. it's all vegan, so you might have to go with just your mom, i suppose, but don't miss it. it's some yummy southern cookin' done right :-)
and i got some fresh apple-carrot-orange-ginger juice there and it was something like $2 or $2.50, which totally blew my mind as anything fresh squeezing in NY would be at least double that from the smallest size!
