Fake meats terminology ramble

Do you call fake-meats by their fake meaty names? eg. soysages, facon, tofurkey.

My friend does, and seems to think these are shibboleths that will gain him entry into our secret world upon use. To me they mark him out as not one of us *chants ( Read more... )

I don't eat the fake meats at all, but I can't ever imagine calling facon 'bacon' or tofurkey 'turkey'. It sounds gross. The words remind me of decaying flesh.

I almost always say 'soy milk' not 'milk' and think 'sausages' is a generic term for putting crappy food in a tube to disguise its crappiness.

It depends on the product or the people I'm around. For example I'll use Scheese or Cheezly depending on the product as they are different and I use them for different things (and currently I have both in my fridge). If I'm around people who know me I just say "sausages" or "chicken curry" because they know I mean the vegan versions of these things.

For "milks" I tend to say soya/coconut/oat etc because they aren't actually milks.

This prefixing business always makes me laugh.

Plus, to me it sounds more like the item is made with vegans. You normally list the ingredient of the food with the name, so vegan butter would be made from breast milk, vegan sausage from ground human flesh, vegan icecream from breast milk, etc.

It could be a regional difference though.

Hah. To be clear, I don't think that people actually think that those things are made with human parts, just that is what it makes me think of.

But I think that some people take it too far as well. "Here, have a vegan carrot!". I don't like prefixing with the word vegan. I will add it at the end sometimes. "Would you like a muffin? They are vegan.", but I would never say "have a vegan muffin!".

It's not like when a carni says:" I could go for a big juicy steak" Imma up a reply : "mmm, yum me too."
Naw, Imma say " I supposed I could go for some tofu steak right now?"

And I for one like name calling on vegan products cos then people be like " oh that sounds hip and fresh, where do you get that?" and you be like " dude at that health food market down there" And they go and buy it, then tells their friends about it, then the market orders more products, and soon everyone is vegan. bam.
