Do you call fake-meats by their fake meaty names? eg. soysages, facon, tofurkey.
My friend does, and seems to think these are shibboleths that will gain him entry into our secret world upon use. To me they mark him out as not one of us *chants*.
Also I think he finds them amusing, which I do too, but I don't find them suitable for serious use.
In my mind only new veg*ns tend to use such terms. Though I know some of you don't use them because you want to distance the vegan item from the cruelty item. I don't like this, I find it much like using "waitress" or "actress", although these terms do indeed give females a separate category, the original category was neutral, it's just that males were the only ones considered people, and thus neutral. I see "ess" in such categories as "but", or "minus", ie. Actor, but a girl, waiter, minus quality.
Anyway, back from my second vs third wave feminism tangent *waits to turn up in the snark*, I see calling soy sausages 'sausages', or soy milk 'milk', the way things should be, because there's no reason either of those things should have animal products, it's not that it's sausages but vegan, or minus tastiness, they're just my sausages - It's what they are.
This is of course complicated by things that are more specifically cruelty-food related terms, like turkey (I do find tofurkey cute, anyway), or perhaps bacon.
