Sugar

Hi there. I'm new to the community. I've been posting some comments but haven't really introduced myself. I have been a vegetarian for about two years now, but I decided to go vegan last fall in August after volunteering on a local organic farm. I'm not that strict in that if some stuff has trace ingredients, or if I'm at my parents house and ( Read more... )

i have a wicked sweet tooth, too. i do a lot of my own baking so at least i know what's going into it, but i haven't really limited my sugar intake too much.

one thing i can eat that totally satiates my sweet tooth is dates. they're crazy sticky super sweet, and a natural foods store near my house sells them all pureed up and rolled in coconut. they're SO good. i also just buy them plain and eat them myself.

other than that, i do eat a lot of fruit, and have a sensitive stomach too (i have GERD pretty bad), so i just eat the fruits that don't bother me. (though i will say that i can eat an orange just fine, but orange juice is a trigger. usually fruits in their whole state don't bother me at all.)

Iiiiiii have a TERRIBLE sweet tooth. TERRIBLE. Last time I made muffins I ate nearly all of them myself, but since I knew I was going to do that I omitted the oil haha.

I've found that bananas are a real help. Having one after a meal sort of cleanses my pallet, and they're sweet and creamy, too. After I eat a banana my sweet tooth is sated... for a while!

You ought to try mashed up over-ripe bananas on top of your muffins - they make an awesome spread.

I have a weird allergy-esque reaction to a lot of fruits too. It just popped out of nowhere when I was around sixteen and I've been suffering through a swollen throat and painfully itchy mouth ever since!! (I continue to choke down all sorts of fruit though, I love it and have no self control...)
Pears are good for my sweet tooth though. Maaaaaaaad pears.

I found that veganism helped a bit with my ridiculous sweet tooth. I'm very busy with school and don't have a lot of time to do baking. There aren't a lot of options to buy vegan baked goods where I live, so I just sort of abide without sweets too much. I look forward more to homecooked meals now than to sweets. There will still be nights when I get home from school and will rush out to Whole Foods to buy a vegan cookie or a dark chocolate bar but I'm getting a lot better with it.

This for me too. Used to be that whenever I was out I desired something sweet. But now that I'm vegan, and I know that very very little out there is vegan, I go without. I yearn for chocolate less since I ate so much dark chocolate. I tend to just make sweets for myself (my mom will get me special stuff from places like veganessentials.com for holidays) and I make them in big batches or I tend to make like three different things in one week. Then I can have different sweets every day!

Agave nectar is a good sugar substitute, because it's low on the glycemic index and so it gets absorbed into your bloodstream a lot slower. I think it still HAS sugar in it, but like I said, low glycemic index blah blah blah. You could probably look it up but I know people who use that instead of sugar and it works great.

Also, I was wondering where I could find more art by Lindsay Campbell (from your icon). I looked her up online but can't seem to get anything.

Yeah her website is down and she doesn't post on deviantart anymore. She has a facebook fan page, which is the only thing I see her update anymore. However, she does have art on flickr here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/31776420@N08/
