Eggs

Mar 07, 2009 00:26

I tried to help someone in another community in terms of suggestions for increasing their intake of protein as a vegetarian. A girl commented suggesting eggs, saying she went vegetarian last week and she eats a lot of eggs and dairy now to increase her protein levels. I tried to be polite and explain that eggs are not good for you. Now I am being ( Read more... )

The post is locked, but I agree with you entirely. Even AR issues aside, eggs and dairy as your main protein sources is far from healthy!

You can still be healthy by limiting your intake of eggs and dairy.... but as far as cholesterol goes, you should limit egg intake to 1 egg/day.... and look at this: http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/dairy-and-egg-products/111/2 when you only eat 1 egg a day, you're only getting 6 grams of complete protein, almost your whole daily amount of cholesterol, and ~350 calories. And if you look at this: http://www.thedailyplate.com/nutrition-calories/food/silk/soymilk-organic-unsweetened (I'm using Silk as a prototype) you're getting 7 grams of complete protein per serving and only 80 calories and no cholesterol ( ... )

increasing dietary cholesterol = more cholesterol in you = bad

i don't see how this is a difficult issue to grasp. these people are just dumb slutcakes with a fear of change.

a word i like. it means whatever you want it to mean, as long as it's not particularly complimentary.

I was hoping it was a delicious baked good of joy :-(

(After all, "weiner" and "faggot" are both insults and food, so why shouldn't there be a vegan one?)

Eggs are better than dairy for protein. Dairy's protein reduces the amount of available calcium absorption to practically nothing... the egg debate has raged on forever. Fact is, no American is threatened by a lack of protein. A handful of nuts and a peice of whole grain bread and BAM...don't need anymore. Most of us get too much, even as vegetarians. Too much protein inhibits all micronutrients from absorbing...getting enough protein is simply all dairy and meat companies can muster up to convince people they should eat it.

Good point. As long as you are getting enough calories and eating a variety of foods you are pretty much guaranteed to be getting enough protein.

Seriously. I took an environmental science and nutrition hybrid class last semester and we learned with a very simple lesson just how easy it is for one to max out on protein on an American diet, which is not really healthy for a person long term. Even using only plant based foods to plan menus you could have an ample amount of protein by lunchtime. Meat eaters had to make a concerted effort not to eat too much protein.
