well, i hope the rest of the summer goes better for you! i understand the family making you feel dumb or odd. my uncle (by marriage) is a dairy farmer and i always get tons of crap from my meat-loving family about being veg. every time i see them.
don't eat the lard-beans, lard is so not food and you'd probably feel even worse for eating them :/
Later today I'm moving back in with my parents (and 2 sisters one who is vegetarian) for about a month. I'm not really looking forward to it because of the same reasons. They don't bother looking or reading labels so I have to be really careful what it is I eat.I am currently broke and have no source of income so I can't buy for myself. I'm hoping all goes well. I'm hoping things improve for you.
I'm 34 and a mom myself and I HATE going to visit my mom (Dad died 6 years ago). Even though I can go out and buy my own food, I don't have my spices, my good knives or my food processor, if I want to make a tahini dressing or hummus, and, for example, I have to buy a big huge jar of tahini knowing most of it will get thrown away. Plus, I wind up with my mom feeding my kid all kinds of crap that I would never let her have at home ("But it's vegetarian!" or worse yet, "I honestly thought it was vegetarian.").
i'd chuck the beans.. i did that with some baked beans once, not realising they had pork fat in them. but i just could NOT bring myself to even feed them to my omni fiance. if nothing else they're so unhealthy and bad for you. you're not losing any nourishment by not eating lard.
as for the being home thing-- i TOTALLY sympathise. i just spent a week at my folks (i'm 30, for what its worth), and i was miserable. and my gall bladder decided to express its disinterest as well (i was sorta tricked into eating cheese and it made me so ill).
are there any cheap places you can go out to eat to escape a bit?
