I'm visiting my parents for the week and my Dad, attempting to offload some of his old things he doesn't use, offered me his old SLR camera as he switched to digital - smaller and cheaper. Knowing that there are little or no vegan alternatives for film I said I would gladly accept it only if he had no one else in mind to give it to. I would much ( Read more... )

I'd love to hear if there is a movement towards it. I got a really nice slr camera for my HS graduation, pre-vegan, and would love to use it again.

I'll reply here again to give you an update if someone below has any helpful advice. It is a little sad when you can't use nice things, especially when they serve as artistic outlets.

on the veganism community i read that Ilford makes a black and white vegan film, but there aren't any coloured vegan films? dunno if that helps...

Actually, I wouldn't mind being restricted to black and white. I probably would have stayed primarily with it anyway.

*checks the veganism community, assuming that's the one you're referring to*
looked through six months' of entries and couldn't find a post referencing film, except for one about going to see movies. It wasn't tagged, either, sadly. Do you happen to have a link?

I also checked Ilford sites. They only seem to promote their photographic paper in detail and neglect to even mention their film. Perhaps I'm looking at the wrong site.

I was looking for the word 'film' rather than 'photography'.

*face palm*

Thank you =)

I've just emailed ILFORD and I'll post back here once I get a reply with what I've found out. I just thought I'd check for myself and find out exactly which products are suitable and whether their production processes are consistent all over the world.

This is an issue I face also, as I fell in love with photography before going vegan. I have my own darkroom that was very expensive to put together, as well as an expensive SLR camera and a few lens.

Depending on some people's definitions, I am not a vegan since I consciously use something with animal products in it, but I will definitely look into the Ilford vegan film.

The "some people's definitions," thing is something that I really have a problem with on this community. There is a lot of snarkiness, insult-throwing, and other such unpleasantness that is spread by many users simply because another person doesn't fit into some personal "definition," of vegan. When it comes to stuff like film, condoms, and other stuff that has been argued about on here recently, I think that people should be encouraged to do the best that they can do - rather than being harassed or insulted by others on high horses. I haven't gotten involved in any of said discussions because I find they don't really go anywhere. Anyways, I just wanted to reflect on the "some people's definitions," line.
My personal view on film is that I use it (I like film so much more than digital,) but I would love to know more about vegan alternatives. If I can find Ilford's vegan film (or some other brand,) I would most definitely consider buying it. I actually wasn't aware that there is any film available that doesn't use gelatin.

I have contacted ILFORD to find out about their film processing techniques. I'll keep you informed if I find out anything.

RE: "some people's definitions". To me, veganism is an attempt to live your life without animal suffering in any form. Knowledge plays a major role in our actions, though, as we can't change something in our lives when we aren't conscious of the animal exploitation problems associated with it. But, once we find out that something we use isn't vegan, we should make a considerable effort to find a replacement that is.

However, this is where it gets complicated as there are some things you can't easily replace, if at all. I don't drive a car, but I know other people (almost?) need to. In the case of non-vegan car tyres, the lack of options should not negate a person's 'vegan status'. In mishealth's situation, they are consciously using an animal product so, to me, it would come down to their ability to cut photography out of their life - if they can easily live without it or happily make the transition to digital, ( ... )

Dude, you get that I'm agreeing with/complimenting this person, right? I hope that you understand that from what I wrote.

I think it's very correct of mishealth to point out that there is a huge amount of nastiness on here.

Personally, I'm sick of the ridicule and all the related shit that goes on on this site. I've observed a lot of it coming from a lot of people and I find it really sad that people aren't putting more effort into encouraging each other - or just stfu-ing if they want to be nasty.

Wow! Me neither. I never use a conventional camera anymore as we have switched over to all digital but I did want to use an SLR someday. I guess now I will have to wait until they come out with some other type of film. Not that I was in a big hurry or anything.

Nope--gelatin!
I swear sometimes that avoiding gelatin will be the death of me. I just found vegetarian (and halal) Jell-O type stuff at a Jordanian market yesterday. That was a big surprise for me, but the hope of finding a vegan *film* makes me feel like there is a new vegan-friendly world developing out there.
