Vegan Beauty Products

Feb 06, 2007 22:30

I recently became a vegan after a very long time as a lacto-vegatarian. I LOVE it so very much!! I would have gone vegan sooner, but my parents weren't too keen on the idea.
Anyway, I need some help regarding 'beauty' products. I have seen the Caring Consumer page, but honestly I am so very confused by it, so I thought maybe I could get some ( Read more... )

I definitely second E.L.F. Their products aren't as good as, say, the stuff I have from Aveda, but it's certainly drugstore-brand quality and super cheap and quick.

For other body products, I always shop the "natural" sections of my grocery stores. I mostly go to health food/co-op places, but other stores like Safeway and Fred Meyer sometimes have a good selection of brands like Kiss My Face, Jason (great body washes and lotions), Avalon Organics, etc. I live in an ultra-hippie/vegan-friendly area, though. :-)

For chapstick, good luck! Stuff from the drugstore will invariably have beeswax or some other animal-based ingredient (which might be okay, depending on your particular views toward things like beeswax). Unless you order from Vegan Essentials or Food Fight!, or have a place like Whole Foods near by, vegan chapstick is incredibly hard to find. It took me almost a year before I realized the Whole Foods near me carried it.

Their site is really nice, and the prices are surprisingly good. Thank you!
I hate the thought of putting bugs on my face, it kind of freaks me out =/

I use Nature's Gate lotion. They have it at the health food section of some Krogers.

The best makeup I've found is http://www.everydayminerals.com - and it's cheap, and about the only stuff that doesn't make me break out or give me hives... For other body/face/hair products, I use mostly Lush: http://www.lush.com - most of the stuff lasts longer than other products (with the exception of the soft soaps), and it's good quality, so it's worth paying extra for... plus, again I don't get the allergy problems with their stuff. I use Aveda for hair styling products.

As for shoes... have you looked at veganessentials.com or mooshoes.com? They change their stock fairly frequently, so maybe keep an eye on their stock...

Vegan Essentials also sell cosmetics and skin/hair care products. I found ZuZu Luxe make-up to be slightly more expensive, but very good quality. Mineral make-up is another option - the purer it is, the less likely it is to be non-vegan, but it's always worthwhile checking with the companies via their websites.

I could be wrong, but I think Vaseline lip care (the stuff that's just petroleum jelly) is vegan.

Ick. Sorry to misinform. I use store-brand petroleum jelly when I'm desperate, but that's only on occassion. Would you happen to know how to find out where store brands are sourced from? I'm terrible with this stuff.

I'm not completely sure, but store brands almost always get their products from the same supplier. But I'm not positive =/

I go to cosmo school at an all natural school....aveda. They use plant dirived materials, they always choose safty of the earth over mass consumption of their products, not tested on animals, and has no ingredients from animals.

They're a total hippie brand yet the stuff is amazing for your hair.
