Every summer I attend a sleep-away summer camp for a month, and this is my first year attending it while being vegan, and I was wondering if anyone else had any experiences similar to this, and if they had any suggestions relating to what to bring and whatnot ( Read more... )

You could get some Cliff bars, or maybe some Primal strips from Foodfight.

Well, there are prolly some easy foods they could cook for you, like pasta or rice, and veggies... maybe you could ask to use the kitchen? It shouldn't be too hard to call ahead and ask if they might use canola oil instead of butter, etc... as as much as you can in advance and see what they can do for you.

Bringing dried fruits would prolly be a good idea, as would clif bars. Clif builder bars aren't bad, with 20g of protein if you're worried about that. A big jar of peanut butter wouldn't be bad either- and dried fruits dipped in PB = heaven! Cereal to go with your soymilk... hmm... if you're familiar with "Just Tomatoes", they make a "Just Veggies"- a bunch of dried veggies that are good to snack on. Oo! Tings! Or some other snacky goodness... granola, etc...

third on the Clif bars. Also, in addition to dried fruits, nuts make great portable, non-perishable, and high-energy snacks.

at the camp i usually go to, they have peanut butter & jelly - i just brought my own bread and soy milk and it ended up going well. i was only there for a week, though.

If at all possible, call ahead of time and let them know you'll need vegan meals. Explain what vegan means, directing them to basic websites/sending information, if necessary.

Absolutely. If you explain that modular meals, where people put their own meals together, would make life easier, I'm sure they'll feel less overwhelmed. Offering to bring extras, like soymilk and vegan margarine, would probably be appreciated.
