i'm not a terribly social person, and when i became vegan 5 years ago it was really easy most of the time because i had friends who were vegan (they've since gone back to being omni) and i didn't go out very often ( Read more... )

I think after the first time you stand up for yourself you will start to feel more comforatable.

People can be insensitive, but it's mostly because they don't understand.

i have the exact same problem! i was hardly ever home, and had absolutely no money. so eating at home would always be a problem, and id eat bread or something with whey in it.
anyway. i digress.
red robins has a boca burger option on their menu, i believe. you just need to specify that you dont want mayonaise on the burger. theyre delicious. make sure that you tell them you want the boca substitute, though, or else theyll put a gardenburger on there.

If someone asks me about being vegan, and I can tell they're a little hostile, I just say sweetly: "For very personal reasons." Anyone who inquires past this is most likely a sociopath :-)

So stick up for yourself if you want, but if you don't want to discuss your dietary preferences, I think that's totally acceptable. And chances are, if you don't make a big deal of what you need to eat (just be polite and firm), they won't either.

I agree completely. Body language often makes a better point than words :-)

I'm much the same way. I don't know if this is feasible for you, but I always tended to just not eat anything if there was nothing vegan available, then stopped by a convenience/grocery/drug store and picked up something to go (often while my friends were busy looking at menus).
